Audiences overindulge as Hunger Games: Catching Fire gobbles up record $110m box office over Thanksgiving holiday weekend

U.S. audiences proved to have an insatiable appetite this Thanksgiving weekend as the top two films, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Frozen both set records.

Overall, domestic box office was $294 million, besting last year's record of $291 million for the 5-day holiday weekend

Catching Fire, the second installment of The Hunger Games franchise, took in $110.2 million Wednesday through Sunday, making it the highest-grossing Thanksgiving movie ever.

The previous title holder was Harry Potter and the Socerer's Stone, which earned $82.4 million in 2001.

Fire, which opened November 23, has a domestic total of $296.5 million. It has earned $276.5 million internationally.

Disney's animated winter tale Frozen, opened Wednesday and took in $93 million over its first five days, for the best Thanksgiving opening of all time, freezing out previous record holder Toy Story 2, which earned $80.1 million over the five-day holiday in 1999.

'The Hunger Games' stars Jennifer Lawrence as a teen who is one of 24 youths forced to compete in a televised death match in a post-apocalyptic North American society.

The film is based on the first novel in the best-selling trilogy by Suzanne Collins. Lionsgate plans to release part two, 'Catching Fire,' in November 2013.

Frozen is voiced by Kristen Bell as a brave princess  who hunts down her sister who has cast a spell of eternal winter.

The cartoon made $66.7 million over the three-day weekend, according to studio estimates, and $16.7 million total internationally.

Rounding out the top 5 were Thor: The Dark World at No. 3 ($15.5 million over five-days, for a total of $186.7 million); The Best Man Holiday at fourth ($11.1 million for a $63.4 million total); and new opener Homefront, an action film starring Jason Statham, which debuted at No. 5 with $9.8 million.

The lower half of to top 10 consisted of Vince Vaughn's sperm-donor comedy Delivery Man at No. 6 ($9.8 million for a $19.5 million total); The Book Thief ($6.4 million for a $7.9 million total) at No. 7; Black Nativity, starring Jennifer Hudson, at No. 8 with a $5 million debut; powerhouse Oscar hopeful Philomena at No. 9 with a $4.8 million opening; and critically acclaimed 12 Years a Slave at No. 10 adding $3 million to its $33.1 total.
