This newspaper was actually a Greenland counterpart of the popular Danish magazine Mikken. Initially, when Sermitiaq was published, Mikken used to be published also. Both these magazine and newspapers continued for almost six months together.
Sermitsiaq was published continuously but Mikken was closed in that same year when the journey of Sermitsiaq began. Mikken was closed in the November that year. Closely before Mikken was closed down, Sermitsiaq was published in Danish language also. But after that it is published in Greenlandic language only. Sermitsiaq was a newspaper which used to be circulated only in the capital city Nuuk of Greenland. But after it was nationalized, Sermitsiaq has been published in the whole of Greenland now. This newspaper serves news from around the world but has a political inclination. During Greenland's Home Rule, this newspaper became a strong political newspaper of Greenland.
