If he looks a little rough around the edges, it’s with good reason.

Indeed, Andrew Garfield plays a man left homeless by a ruthless realtor in his latest film – and he sported a grizzled beard as he relaxed between takes on Monday.

The actor is currently shooting new drama 99 Homes on location in New Orleans, and he appeared to have embraced his role as a young man struggling from the bottom up.

He was joined on set by Boardwalk Empire star Michael Shannon, who idly toyed with his phone while clutching a distinctive looking tankard.

The chisel-jawed actor has been cast as the money-minded real estate broker responsible for evicting Garfield, his elderly mother and his nine-year old daughter from their property.

According to Deadline, an ironic twist of fate will befall Garfield’s character when he is forced to work for Shannon – whose character is described as ‘powerful, greedy, charming and gun-toting’ – in order to keep a roof over their heads.

The film, co-written and directed by Ramin Bahrani, is said to be inspired by the financial crash of 2008 and its devastating consequences on families all over the United States.

It will also see Garfield’s character encounter a series of moral complications by switching from evictee to evictor.

As well as evicting helpless tenants, he will collude with his corrupt employer to embezzle money from the government.

Garfield was the first actor to confirm his involvement in the new project – a vast difference from his commercially appealing current stint as Spider Man.

The actor has previously won praise for his portrayal of Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin in The Social Network, while his gritty performance as an ambitious young journalist in the made for TV Red Riding trilogy introduced him to a new audience of fans.

Shannon’s forthcoming appearance comes off the back of his own TV work as Nelson Van Alden in HBO hit Boardwalk Empire.

The actor’s last big screen appearance came in Man Of Steel – in which he played General Zod opposite Henry Cavill’s Superman.

99 Home sis scheduled for release in 2014.
