Forecasters said the winds combined with unusually high tides and giant waves will create a potentially catastrophic tidal surge on the east coast at around 10pm tonight. The surge will bring a risk of 'significant' flooding and in some places sea levels could be as high as those during the devastating floods of 1953. Gusts of 114mph have already been recorded on the slopes of Aonach Mor near Fort William in the Scottish Highlands with stronger winds set to come.
