Not looking so magical now! Actress Emma Watson has a make-under for upcoming biblical movie Noah

Actress Emma Watson has been transported back in time in upcoming movie, Noah, which sees her star as the biblical character's adoptive daughter, Ila.

In a new film still, the 23-year-old sits by the river bank in a look which is worlds apart from anything she has been seen in before.

Her hair is messy and there's not a shred of haute couture in sight. Instead, the grubby-looking character wears a frayed brown skirt and a green holey top.

In a full length trailer of Noah, Emma's character can be seen portending world destruction in the sneak peek.

But the biblical adaptation - which is reportedly exceeding its $125million budget - may be headed down its own road to doom as it has been testing poorly with religious audiences, possibly the film's largest market.

Hollywood legend, Russell Crowe stars as the biblical ark builder in the film based on the Old Testament tale, which sees him sport a full bushy beard.

Handsome actor, Douglas Booth plays Noah's son, Shem and he has a relationship with Ila.

The story focuses on Noah's mission to save his family after seeing visions of an inevitable apocalypse.

The trailer opens with Noah waking in the middle of the night to terrible visions. Jennifer Connelly, who plays Noah's wife Naameh, asks: 'What did he [god] say?'

The burly actor replies: 'He's going to destroy the world.'

Anthony Hopkins plays Noah's grandfather Methuselah, who encourages the burgeoning prophet to trust his inner visions, saying: 'He [god] speaks to you. You must trust that he speaks to you in a way you can understand.'

It then shows Crowe fully submerged in water, before he is heard saying: 'I saw water. Death by water. And I saw new life.'

But the bushy haired visionary has his work cut out for him beyond just preparing for the flood as he and his family live in a dark world populated by savage and brutal men.

In one scene featured in the clip, Ray Winstone can be seen as a rival marauder who tries to take over the ark and possibly kill Noah and his family.

The two go head to head, but Crowe with his divine backup of course prevails.

The film promises to be CGI heavy, with many wild and invented creatures populating the ark.

Near the end of the preview clip we are given a glimpse of Watson, who is depicted having a conversation with Crowe while on the ark.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount has been holding test screenings with both Jewish and Christian audiences (along with a general control group) to see how the biblical adaptation is received.

The screenings have produced troubling results, but the director Darren Aronofsky has been 'dismissive' of the studios concerns.

The director, whose previous works include Black Swan and The Fountain, is known for possessing an intense artistic vision.

But this is the largest budget he has ever worked with, so will have much more studio input than his previous films.

One well-known Christian writer Brian Godawa obtained a copy of the screenplay last year and wrote on his blog: 'If you were expecting a Biblically faithful retelling of the story of the greatest mariner in history and a tale of redemption and obedience to God you’ll be sorely disappointed.'

He went on to disparage Aronofsky's depiction of the biblical hero, writing snidely: 'Noah is a kind of rural shaman [in the film], and vegan hippy-like gatherer of herbs. But he also mysteriously has the fighting skills of an ancient Near Eastern Ninja.'

He then called the direction of the film 'manipulative narcissistic nonsense.'

Meanwhile, Noah will be Aronofsky's first film after the Oscar winning ballet drama Black Swan - and is scheduled for release on March 28, 2014.

Noah had 3 sons - Shem, Ham and Japheth - and no daughters... so did Hermione spin her time-turner a few times too many or what, exactly?!
