Parents were left scrambling to cover their children's eyes after the trailer for X-rated film Nymphomaniac was accidentally shown in a Florida cinema.

The family audience were gearing up to watch the animated Disney film Frozen, but were instead flooded sex scenes from Lars von Trier's explicit new film.

'It seemed like forever when you’re trying to, you know, cover a little guy’s eyes,' audience member Lynn Green told Fox News. 'I didn’t have enough hands to cover his ears too and he got the sound down real good.'

The trailer is rife with nudity and violence, and shows Shia LeBeouf and his co-star Stacy Martin in various compromising positions.

A teaser trailer was removed from YouTube in November after breaching the site's rules on nudity and sexual content.

Parents allegedly struggled to cover their children's eyes and ears, and some even dashed out the cinema.

'You’re talking, what, a PG-rated movie to all of a sudden have an R-rated scene up there for little children?' said Green, a grandmother.

The Pinellas Park cinema apologised for the mishap and has offered free movie tickets to the audience.

Critics have called the trailer the most explicit ever to be screened in a mainstream cinema.

The film, which features real sex scenes performed by body doubles, also stars Charlotte Gainsbourg, Uma Thurman, Jamie Bell and Christian Slater.

Little is known about the details of the narrative, except that the film is based around Gainsbourg's character Joe who is a self-proclaimed sex addict

Uma Thurman plays the wife of a husband who has sex with Joe, and is seen dramatically screaming and crying amid scenes of a very sexual nature in the trailer.

LeBoeuf  has previously spoken about his willingness to participate in the movie's pornographic scenes, which he says is all in the name of art.

'I have ethics. I'm not completely out of my mind,' he says.

'But I don't think there's anything wrong with sex. Sex is beautiful if it's done right. And I wouldn't just do it for no reason... Sex is different than love, and there is a separation, and that middle gap is what the movie's about.'

The movie is yet to be given a confirmed release date.

Though it is obvious this was no accident, parents should have known in the first few seconds--BEFORE THE SEX this was kid inappropriate...and removed their children before it got graphic.

"he says is all in the name of art" Art?! I hate pretentious people who use that excuse. There's nothing artsy about this, it's a movie about SEX. And where I come from that's called P()RN. And the smart people wouldnt pay to watch that in a theater when it's available for free online. That being said, I can imagine the awkwardness in that theater after they showed that trailer, must have totally ruined the cheerful mood.

No pity for the parents who had to sit through that dumb trailer and Shia LeBoring's accent? I'd rather have a root canal than sit through an entire Lars Von Tries Too Hard film. Never again.
