The bigotry that dares not speak its name

According to Sue Everhart, chair of the Georgia Republican Party, the push for marriage equality isn’t about equality at all.

It’s a massive financial scam.

164881.5936954As she told the Marietta Daily Journal:

“Say you had a great job with the government where you had this wonderful health plan. I mean, what would prohibit you from saying that you’re gay, and y’all get married and still live as separate, but you get all the benefits? I just see so much abuse in this it’s unreal. I believe a husband and a wife should be a man and a woman, the benefits should be for a man and a woman. There is no way that this is about equality. To me, it’s all about a free ride.”

That’s the kind of weirdness you get when irrational bigotry tries to rationalize itself. Rather than acknowledge to yourself that yes, you are indeed treating people as second-class citizens, you invent a reason that you find less threatening to your self-image:

“I’m not a bigot. I’m just …. concerned about fraud. Yeah, that’s the ticket. Fraud! Abuse!”

Everhart also made it clear that “I’m not saying that we ostracize (gay people) or anything like that. I’m just saying I’m against marriage because once you get the gay marriage you get everything else.”

I’m not sure what that “everything else” might be. I’m not sure I want to know.

Back when I was in the Navy, it was common for waves and sailors to get married and collect separate housing/living/dependent benefits, so what she says could happen. There will always be the scam artists among us. A minor percentage of people who will taint the whole game. What is sad though is those people who will focus on that small percentage to try to bring the whole game down…those are the true scam artists…

L. Dude — “It’s because there’s so much fraud already with straight couples that with gay couples, we’ll double the fraud!”

“Oh wait. . .”

My wife had a friend in college who did the fake straight marriage thing. From what my wife tells me, her circle of friends included a young fellow from one of the countries that once was Used-To-Be-Slavia, and he got some kind of draft notice from his home country. I guess he didn’t want to get his bohunkus shot off, and apparently there was some kind of exemption he could get so long as he was married to a foreign national and living in her country.

So this guy apparently talked one of my wife’s friends into it and they got hitched. No idea what happened after that; p’raps I’ll ask my wife if any of her Facebook friends are still in contact with the girl that married the guy.

Quoting Sue Everhart above: “I just see so much abuse in this it’s unreal.”

That’s right, because it’s in your imagination.

Or does that mean she sees that much abuse NOW with married couples? Does that mean she thinks straight folks shouldn’t marry because they might abuse the system?

If I could shake my head at this, I think my head would wobble as bad as those creatures from hell in that movie with that demon.

None. I knew a couple who were life partners for years, but not married. When she became ill with an incurable, but protracted disease…they were married so she would be covered by his insurance. I do NOT see that as a “scam” but simply a way to deal with the reality of a wonderful partnership that got slapped upside the head(s) by a changing situation.

You know what’s actually kind of sad about this?

Read her remarks again–Jay quoted them already but I’m gonna copy/paste that same graf, again:

“You may be as straight as an arrow, and you may have a friend that is as straight as an arrow,” Everhart said.

Think about what is REALLY behind this. What she is saying is that a man and a woman can’t form a friendship like two people of the same sex might do, in order to do this sham-marriage thingie that keeps her up nights. I guess she’s thinking that if two opposite sexers who were “straight as an arrow” were to even try such a thing, why, they’re gonna want to do the nasty-nasty with each other, and, then… IT’LL BE A REAL MARRIAGE! JUST LIKE IN THE MOOVIEZ!

Did I say it was sad? mostly it’s just stupid. But I felt this point needed makin’.

When I was in the army, two gay couples got married. Each of the two men in one gay couple married one of the women in the other gay couple. They all rented a two bedroom apartment and the men shared one bedroom, while the two women shared the other. Each one got an adjusted “quarters” and “food” allowance…and they were doing pretty well. Jay- According to Sue Everhart, chair of the Georgia Republican Party, the push for marriage equality isn’t about equality at all. It’s a massive financial scam.

I’ve been saying that since before they started work on getting rid of Don’t ask, don’t tell.

-That’s the kind of weirdness you get when irrational bigotry tries to rationalize itself.

I guess the truth would seem like a strange notion to you Jay. Talk the benefit provisions out of gay marriage an that topic would drop like a rock.

So is she stating that only homosexuals would commit this type of fraud? That heterosexual people would not try this? Does that mean one group is more or less ethical??/ Sheeesh

What some of us are trying to show you [bigots] is that if you claim that fraud will occur, and thus marriages should not happen between homosexual couples, then that means that since FRAUD ALREADY OCCURS WITH HETEROSEXUAL COUPLES, THEN HETEROSEXUALS SHOULD NOT GET MARRIED.

Do you see now why this is a stupid argument?

Billy Graham Faces Backlash Over Mormon ‘Cult’ Removal

(RNS) The Rev. Samuel Wynn admired Billy Graham and his evangelistic association for decades, joining its spiritual crusades and urging fellow Christians to do the same. But no more.

“I will never again support anything by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association,” said Wynn, the superintendent of a United Methodist Church district in Fayetteville, N.C.

The source of Wynn’s ire: The BGEA’s recent removal of language on its website calling Mormonism a “cult.”

The scrubbing followed GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s pilgrimage to Billy Graham’s mountaintop home in Montreat, N.C. After the Oct. 11 meeting, Graham pledged to “do all I can to help” Romney, according to a campaign aide.

The BGEA said it cut the “cult” language “because we do not wish to participate in a theological debate about something that has become politicized during this campaign.”

But Wynn and other conservative Christians accuse Graham of putting partisanship above piety and risking Christian souls to help Romney, a Mormon, win the White House.
