Pets on parade: Costume competition brings out the funny, the creative and the strange in pet owners across the country

Pet owners are spending record amounts on pet costumes, but that hasn’t stopped a few from making some creative get-ups on their own.

According to the National Retail Federation, tens of millions of people will spend about $358million to make their pets look just as ghoulish as the trick or treaters roaming their neighborhoods.

So many people are dressing their dogs and cats that Petco has started a Facebook costume competition, with a $25,000 reward on tap for the winner.

With costumes ranging from the bizarre to the adorable and even hilarious, there’s something for everyone.

One costume stands out though, a Pug dresses as Miley Cyrus’ ‘Wrecking Ball’ music video, and it comes with step-by-step instructions. This pooch leads the competition with over 2,500 votes so far.

Pretty sure the "elf puppy" in the last shot is supposed to be Yoda. The lion is my favorite and looks the least insane :)

My Pomeranians typically went as a pumpkin and lady bug. This year it is Superman dog and a dragon. I only leave the costumes on for about 10 minutes.

My dog would run away in shame if I tried to dress her in a costume.

The wrecking ball pug looks the funniest with Miley Cyrus on top and that lion costume almost looks so natural. The mane almost matches the color of the dogs fur

The Madonna dog is Aspen, whose owner creates her own costumes, to help raise money for various animal shelters here in the USA. Aspen is VERY happy to dress up, in fact, to her fans, she looks 'funny' naked!

Damn stupid, bordering on cruel. If only these so-called dog lovers would send the money to animal rescue centres.
