bnobby 5pts Trying not to be condescending but coming to an auto blog and seeing all the comments about MB being so well thought of shows me how many people are just blind loyalists and never really drive more than one car for any length of time. For the past 3 summers I've had the distinguished honor of driving Audi, MB, Cadillac, BMW and Porsche across the country w a group of fresh out of college students. Any of whom should love any of these cars. It has never failed across three summers - the least favorite of every single college student but one (and the much older leaders of the tours) has been the MB. That includes the CLS550, the S550, the E350 and the GLK. Every year they've come in dead last out of all the brands as far as fun to drive, dependability, and cost of upkeep over the summer. The MB even had most of the seals break around the plastic turn signals in the side mirrors creating a good amount of condensation within the first two months. The CLA was designed and built by young designers MB went out and hired to develop a car for the younger generation. Problem is it still drives like a MB - if the CLS is going to start falling apart in 2 months I can't even imagine what the cheaper built CLA is going to do.
mj car guy 5pts Ah, "the tried and true, old and tired car of the year award" goes to CTS! LOL the editors must all be 75 years old or poorly adapt to new technology and design.
artrios87@yahoo.com 5pts The Fiesta driving dynamics, the Mercedez Benz luxury, the Jaguar's muscle car attitude with classic beautiful design language. The corvette's performance and price. I cannot really choose a favorite but many in different classes. With all that been said let me start.1.Luxury segment: Mercedez S Class 2.Fun on a Budget: Ford Fiesta 3.Pure Sex: Jaguar 4. All Around Awesomeness: Cadillac 5: Affordable Supercar: Chevy Corvette 6.American Muscle: Dodge/SRT Viper
Loopdelooop 5pts Cayman S 0-60 3.9???? Woah! You guys must have killed the PDK getting that time. I personally you think you give it to the vette...the CTS is great but the vette is the game changer, with its insane acceleration , comfy ride ,unreal track times and all important wow factor. It is the "it" car of the moment and thats something not even porsche can say, you can roll up in a GT3-rs. 4.0 or a 911 turbo or even an aston martin vanquish and no one will care because everyone is looking at the VETTE...i'm not even a fanboy, it's the truth
eagle2126 5pts Acura really has gotten ugly, what is going on at Honda/ Acura headquarters? Do they really expect us to pay good money for an ugly car. Acura please get it right. Americans are not as dumb as you think we are. Well, at least most of us are not. ;-)
Cass Foreal 5pts Hold on I want to read about how Hyundai/Kia "barely miss the mark with numb steering feel" for the 12th year in a row.
AP 5pts The CLAs gauges are really dumb...totally geared to look good and not caring enough to be easy to read. The fuel and temp gauges are tiny. Instead there is a huge tach (not needed at all, just eye candy in an automatic) that is useless in an age of computer controlled engines. Why have the guts to dump the tach and use the space for some other needed and easily read gauges?
orchestral whips 5pts All hail the Fiesta ST, the most car for the buck here, probably the car here a majority of testers would pay their own money to own? It's the ultimate assault vehicle for zipping around and between yawning drivers on a BRISK morning commute to work!
Always Right 5pts Reading the reviews of the Finalists it seems to me that the top 3 that were really battling it out were the CTS, Vette, and S-Class. (I know MT listed the Mazda3 as in the top 3 but reading the reviews it doesn't sound that way. The tiny back seat is a big compromise in this class, especially with the new Corolla.) The win could have gone to any of these other 3, IMO. The CTS seems to offer the most complete and competitive lineup in it's class, offering customers endless options from turbo-4 to twin-turbo V6. The Vette is now offering super car performance at bargain prices, with no compromises. And as MT states, the S-Class is the new benchmark. So really any of these 3 could have won it. I am sure the debates must have gotten heated.
pxr911 5pts The problem with Acura is there design teams do not have a clue as to how to design a modern, attractively styled vehicle. All of their designs are dated and ugly, the signature beak grille has never worked and yet Acura stubbornly continues this hideous grille that should have been abandoned years ago. No matter how good the car drives or performs I would never buy any Acura that is styled like the current models.
DavidNJ 5pts There may be reasons to knock off the Cayman and the F-type. The Corvette and the S-Class represent significant advances in design and technology and move each way in front at the head of their respective classes. The Cadillac CTS? Are you kidding? 2 of its 3 engines are mediocre at best. The 8-speed trans isn't available with AWD used in large parts of the country. Tech level is medium at best with key features of a modern car (e.g. LED headlights with anti-dazzle high beams) are no wear in sight (Corvette also has the old head light problem). Cadillac dealers are largely way below the standard of sales and service quality expected in their price range. And the CTS isn't cheap, often more expensive than the equivalent E-class. I passed on the Audi A6, BMW 535d, E250CDI this year in favor of weighting for a 2016/2017 E-class. The CTS got a look but just doesn't measure up as a luxury car. Maybe if the editors made a bit more money and actually bought cars in this class they would have a different view.
Matthew1972 5pts I'll take the looks of the RLX over the CTS that looks like Carly Simon's caricature for the next Cars movie. And oh hey GM, pay back the money you the US tax payers,
Coach711 5pts The Vette should have won hands down !! Best band for the buck WORLDWIDE !!You blew it,MT
impalastreetracer17 5pts I find it amusing that the V6 and V6 Turbo both got better mpgs than what it is listed at. This whole 4cyl thing is nothing more than a marketing scam for idiots. That engine has to work a lot harder than the V6. Ford Ecoboost is a complete joke. 4cyl should only be in small cars.
Alvin Jaimangal 5pts Actually I also thought the Vette should have won, hands down the best performance for the price, styling, technology. To put it in perspective 54grand to get super car performance numbers, it's cheaper than the low end Porsche Cayman. And for the price of the cars that were better you could buy a vette and the Caddy. I do think the CTS deserved to win for the fact it is more practical being a sedan, you won't have too many cars walking you at the line either. Only thing I wish they put some nicer wheels on it but hey thank you aftermarket!!!!
deepen915 5pts and just wait til the 370 HP Sport Hybrid SH-AWD RLX releases.. then we'll see what you have to say about the RLX.
deepen915 5pts Okay these motor magazines really are Acura haters.. the RLX got bashed for the most ridiculous things.. First of all, how can you call the Headlights bugeyed? The new Acura Jewel Eye HID LED lights are the most innovative piece of technology out there.. Instead of popping on an LED strip to copy Audi, like Lexus and Benz did, they actually made the lights completely LEDs. That's innovative right there.. and how is it an ugly car? That is purely opinion, as I find the car to be absolutely gorgeous. It is easily the best looking Acura since the 3G TL. The Acura hatred on some sites is just pathetic. They offer more standard features than any other Luxury brand. Benz and BMW charge extra for HIDs! Luxury Cars come with Halogen lights according to them. Give me a break!
HN_SJ 5pts Too bad the 2014 Maserati Ghibli was not included. It would have won with its exhaust sound alone.
emlod@yahoo.com 5pts I have a Volvo S60 and I love the car. The performance and handling are excellent. I don't have a race track handy to do many of the tests but the car is more than adequate for sane driving. The seats are very comfortable and I like the accessories. I paid under $35,000 for it through a car buying service. No problems. good dealer service and I expect the car to be reliable and durable. It has a turbo and runs on regular fuel. I've tested many cars myself and decided that this car was the best and the price was a steal.
Chiney Whale 5pts I am confused on how the IS's driving dymanics trails its competitors yet it has won every comparo with the competitors. I jus wish these road tests were more consistent. One day it beats its competitors than the next day it trails.
ThePassRush 5pts Caddy pretty much adopted, BMW's abandoned child, pure sporty performance. I get BMW is trying to be a luxury benchmark but to be honest that was never its defining quality. By chasing the Benzes and Bentleys, BMW has lost some of its identity. It's good to see that initial impressions of the 4 are solid. And I'm eagerly anticipating the new 2. I'm reading that the next 7 series will lose significant weight via carbon fibre that BMW has been experimenting with their i3 and i8. Hopefully the next 5 will follow suit. But honestly, this current generation of BMW has not been its most lauded and that should upset the builders of the proclaimed Ultimate driving machine.
Dizzy T 5pts Having Test drove the Infiniti Q50 I'd have to say the DAS steering is a different and good experience. It actually cancels all the unwanted bumps in the road providing a very smooth and good steering feel. Don't know how well that translate to tracking the car but it was a really smooth ride on the street, which is where most people will drive this car. The steering is digitally adjustable so you can dial in if you like a light or heavy steering feel. I was impressed in every aspect of the Q50, from straight line performace to Road manners to luxury and Tech, I thought MotorTrend would give higher marks. it really is the best overall car in the class.
Infidelis 5pts @bnobby I guess it never occurred to you that college-age students aren't the people Mercedes Benz is targeting in their product offerings.Someone with the taste, refinement and financial capacity to actually BUY a Mercedes Benz has a completely different set of expectations than does some unemployed college student who exists on Ramen noodles and stale beer while fretting over the fate of the polar bear.Shazam!
Infidelis 5pts @Loopdelooop What? The Corvette should be ruled out for styling alone. The rear end isn't just ugly, it is grotesque. It looks like it was designed by a class of eight year-olds interning at Mattel. The Cayman, on the other hand, is one of the most stylish sports cars in a generation--an instant classic--that has no bad angles. The fact that the Cayman possess world-class performance that meets or exceeds that of cars that cost double makes it a stone cold bargain in the small and elite class of refined European high-performance sports cars--a class the Corvette will never occupy no matter how much performance GM can squeeze out of a push rod V8.I give credit to the Corvette for what it is, and forgive it for what it isn't. But the Corvette, like the Viper, will never occupy the same space as Porsche (or Ferrari) no matter how fast it goes around a track.
Ushbay89 5pts @AP Any person with eyes can read these gauges easily. I found nothing wrong with them. If you seriously have a problem with the gauges, then you must be the most pickiest car buyer on earth. You will simply never buy a car because you're too picky and need to get a life. The Mercedes CLA is a great car because it has loads of torque, strong brakes, excellent transmission, and it rides really well. The best part is that it looks sexy, and it's really fast, 0-60 mph in only 6.2 seconds for a very reasonable price.
car_enthusiast 5pts @pxr911 I am afraid Acura's problems are more than skin deep. I would take a Hyundai Genesis over Acura's flagship any day. Soon the Genesis will be redesigned and have AWD. While this is a compliment to Hyundai it is more of a wakeup call to Acura, which used to be at the forefront of innovation and luxury/performance value.
Ushbay89 5pts @Matthew1972 I definitely think the RLX is uglier than the CTS. The Acura grille is very ugly. But the Cadillac grille is very boring. The CTS is just too plain and boring. I don't see the attractiveness in a style that has been used since 2001, it looks outdated.
car_enthusiast 5pts @Matthew1972You my friend are in the rare minority of opinion on this matter. Let's get back to substance, from class leading efficiency and base model power to world class performance from the CTSV that is in a completely different league than the RLX. BTW; I am glad we still have a GM, for it is good for the US economy and good for the auto industry. In case you did not notice the General has many great cars on this list, including the Impala, Vette and CTSV. Not included are the ATS, Cruze diesel and their 22mpg V-8 trucks. The General is truly innovating and building very good cars, in which we the public benefit.
GreenGrape29 5pts @Matthew1972 Hey Matt tell the Banks to give back the $700 Billion they got, of which hundreds of millions of dollars went to bonuses, then we'll worry about the $9 billion the government is projected to lose on GM.
Marty Scheffel 5pts @Matthew1972 They have!!! They also have bought back all the stock that was given to the government in the corporations restructuring. When you make comments, know your facts first.
AP 5pts @impalastreetracer17 A complete joke? If you really believe that then your understanding of modern engine is the complete joke here.
mcbich20 5pts @Alvin Jaimangal The Nissan GT-R won it one year so I personally can't fathom why the CTS won. The Vette is HALF THE PRICE of a GT-R and just like you mentioned gives you super car performance. Cadillac must be paying some editors over at Motor Trend for this victory... Let's check their wallets!!!
Christopher Abramo 5pts @deepen915 The problem with Acura is quite simple.. their design team is absolutely horrible. They put out some of the most expensive hideous cars I can remember in a long time. Even a Volvo has more design language in it. Really, once they catch on that they need to hire a new design team and bring their car into this century in terms of aesthetics, they will be back on the map. Until then, no one cares one bit about what they are building. Except for the penny pinchers who really have no care about eliciting any emotion from looking at their machine. You get a high from saving some cash to get a similar performance.. sorry but that's not what speaks to most car junkies. Of course the NSX will be their banner to say they can make a good looking car. But until they bring some of that look into their lineup.. they are irrelevant to the majority of us.
mcbich20 5pts @deepen915 I agree, Acura doesn't get the praise they should. I bought a 2012 TL simply because the price was much less than any of the competition and the interior and engine were just as good (from a value perspective). I paid for a price similar to a base BMW 328i (a car with non of the options I had standard) and got a car equivalent in size to a BMW 5-series. While the RLX deserves more praise, Acura will never get it because the publications know what sells magazines, and that's a flashy Mercedes or BMW on their cover. When it comes down to it, Acura cannot compete with these cars in terms of publicity unless they come out with a crazy 450-500hp 4-door monster that really shakes things up. Price that car under $50,000 and throw in some NSX technology and then they'll get plenty of attention.
TychoMonolith 5pts @emlod@yahoo.com They only include cars that are new or significantly refreshed. When was the last time Volvo released something new?
Always Right 5pts @Chiney Whale I think they are taking the entire lineup into consideration. The IS250 was never a serious competitor and Lexus did nothing to change that. The top end 350/F-Sport is great. But the 250 drags the overall IS line down.
mcbich20 5pts @Chiney Whale For the price the 2014 IS and it's engine lineup is awful, that's why it's a loser. An IS 250 AWD has a 0-60 time of almost 8 seconds. You can pick ANY luxury sedan and option it out with AWD and their smallest engine option will probably still beat the IS by a full second (even the BMW 320i with 180hp beats it). It's insulting that they STILL try to put a 204hp / 185ft lb V-6 engine in a premium car. Tack on there the fuel economy figures that are not impressive and that's why the car will never win. I think the car looks fantastic and I would buy it in a second if they had a base turbo engine with 240hp+ that delivered some low end torque for everyday driving but any enthusiast wouldn't be caught dead in that car simply because you'll be in the slow lane all day long.
Bill Lee 5pts @Dizzy T Yup... for most Americans in most driving situations, the steering is probably better... but then again... it's a performance sedan so handling is arguably more important than comfort. If it was the ES on the hand... totally acceptable.
carenthusiast13 5pts I absolutely love my Infiniti Q50 Premium AWD. That model still features Infiniti's hydraulic steering, which is precise and provides great feedback.
bnobby 5pts @Ushbay89 to each his own I guess but I think the real problem with the CLA is it was designed by younger engineers hired specifically to design a car for the younger crowd at a price point for those that can't afford a typical MB. The one thing they didn't change bc MB wouldn't let them is the drive/feel - younger generations not to mention my 50 yr old self don't want to drive my sofa around. It does look 'different' - can't call it beautiful w those funky red light rings but if the dependability issues of recent years holds true for the 85,000 line I can only imagine what the 35,000 line is going to go through.
ron powell 5pts From Reuters on Nov 21stTreasury on Thursday said it had completed the sale of 70.2 million shares of GM stock and to date had recouped $38.4 billion from the $49.5 billion taxpayer-funded rescue of the Detroit company. At current prices, Treasury would recoup another $1.2 billion from its remaining stake of 31.1 million shares, bringing its total recovery to $39.6 billion. Treasury said its initial cost basis for the GM shares was $43.52 per share.
Matthew1972 5pts @Marty Scheffel @Matthew1972 http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2013/09/15/why-gm-still-owes-taxpayers.aspx
girah3 5pts @mcbich20 @deepen915 I appreciate the passion that both of you share for the brand, but I have to disagree. Acura was once quite popular with public at large and automotive journalists. The cars they produced performed well, but more importantly they were a more luxurious expression of Honda's sense of balance and vehicle feel. One of the more popular examples (and a personal favorite of mine) is the 2004 - 2008 TL. It was an amazing car in that it satisfied on several levels. It was conservatively attractive, drove well, brought a measure of luxury, competitive performance, characteristic Honda quality, and efficiency. In the move from this model to 2009 and beyond, they created a more highly styled and technologically oriented vehicle. It seems as though they wanted the vehicle's looks and tech to sell it. It didn't work. They tried to lead buyers to a new niche, but found themselves with few followers. What's needed more than anything else is the kind of balanced, driver-centric experience and performance that made automotive editors compare the early Honda Preludes to BMWs. While new technology is necessary to stay competitive, what the current cars lack is soul. If Acura can find it's soul again, it will find it's customers. Oh, and a better naming strategy wouldn't hurt either...
Christopher Abramo 5pts @TychoMonolith @emlod@yahoo.com Or cared if they did? Volvo = boring. Safe.. adequate.. and boring.
John Phu Nguyen 5pts @Matthew1972 @Marty Scheffel GM doesn't owe the US any money.. The US government decided bail out GM by buying shares of the company. And because of politics and the election cycle, the US decided to sell the shares before they're positive. The government would've made a whooping amount of money if they invested like an investor and waited until now to sell, rather than letting election cycles dictate their decisions. In any case, I don't disagree with the decision to sell at a loss since the election cycle should be the government's bigger concern over their stake in GM. It is ridiculous to expect GM to still owe the US money just because the US sold lower than the price they bought stock at. If that were the case, dozens of companies would owe me money. The bailout of GM is the same as if a large bank bails out a big company.. they get shares and they take it at a risk of earning money and also the risk of losing money.
Bill Lee 5pts @Matthew1972 @Marty Scheffel If GM went bankrupt, the gov't would not receive income tax payments from GM, its employees and suppliers and the gov't would have to pay out more in welfare payments... overall, I'd say the gov't is ahead and the welfare of the US is greater because of the bailout.
