October 04, 1987: Roop Kanwar, an 18-year-old widow who had been married just eight months, mounted the funeral pyre of her 24-year-old husband Maal Singh in the village of Deorlala and, taking Maal's head in her lap according to tradition, she was burned alive in an act of sati. The site has become a shrine where thousands of dollars are collected in donations every year.
