Their epic bromance began last year with 21 Jump Street.

And now Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill appear to be taking their buddy cop partnership to the next level in the sequel filming in Puerto Rico.

Channing was spotted locked in an emotional hug with Jonah after rescuing his portly co-star from drowning in the sea on set of 22 Jump Street, on Wednesday.

In character as Schmidt, Jonah was visibly frightened as he clung to his muscular co-star's arm whilst wading in some rough grey seas.

The 29-year-old wore a red Aloha shirt over a black graphic T-shirt as he sported a pair of swim trunks.

But proving that his undercover cop persona is not particularly comfortable at the beach, Hill wore high top trainers for his jaunt in the ocean.

Channing, who plays Jenko,wore a vest with the words 'suns out guns out' emblazoned across his chest in a nod to his athletic frame.

Donning stripy board shorts for the day of shooting, the 33-year-old also strangely sported high top trainers, even wearing them as he waded into the surf to save his friend.

After the taxing rescue mission, Channing wrapped Jonah in a big bear hug as he patted his co-star's head.

Channing was seen with a bullet wound in his right arm, which appeared to bleed after his brisk swim in the ocean - due to the magic of film make-up.

The duo were aided during their action sequence by some burly watermen who provided Tatum with a few floaties, allowing him to rest in the water in-between takes.

But Jonah, apparently not a confident swimmer, used a stunt double for much of the work in the pounding surf.

On Monday the official plot synopsis for 22 Jump Street was released and indicated that things will grow frosty for Schmidt and Jenko.

‘After making their way through high school (twice), big changes are in store for officers Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) when they go deep undercover at a local college,’ the synopsis reads.

‘But when Jenko meets a kindred spirit on the football team, and Schmidt infiltrates the bohemian art major scene, they begin to question their partnership.
