The heartbreaking moment a puppy runs after a car in desperation after it was dumped at the gate of an animal centre has been caught on CCTV.

The footage shows a silver Renault car drawing up to the gates of the RSPCA Birmingham Animal Centre, before the driver opens a door and forces the Staffordshire bull terrier puppy out.

The car is then seen speeding off, with the six-month-old puppy chasing after it in desperation. The confused dog can then be seen running back to the animal centre's gates.

She was fortunately picked up by two members of the public who found her outside the gates a short while later.

It is not known if the driver of the car was the dog's owner.

Elaine Buchan, RSPCA centre manager, said: 'It was really hard for staff to watch the CCTV and see this incident unfold and then watch as this driver just sped off leaving this puppy alone.

'As she starts to follow the car your heart just breaks for her, she’s been dumped alone and left confused - just because someone doesn’t want her any more.

'It is even more upsetting that this has been done just before Christmas.

'People who take on animals have a legal responsibility to care for them and people who take on a pet should take into account whether they have the time and money to care for the animal 365 days of the year for potentially the next 10 to 20 years.

'Dumping them is not acceptable - pets are a lifelong commitment and people need to think carefully before getting a pet as animals have the right to be loved for life.'

Looking at my lovely sleeping kitten now I could never imagine parting with him. Id spend my last few pounds on feeding him if I had to. Perhaps some people just don't deserve such lovely trusting and loyal pets... I hope the little sweetie finds a home that treat him like the little prince he is

It is easy to condemn but a great many British people are really struggling right now to pay their mortgage/rent, heat their homes and afford food. No one knows the circumstances behind this. It might have been an act of desperation. - Bob, Swansea, United Kingdom, 13/12/2013 18:16 No excuse to just dump the animal. Have some front and hand it in like a decent human being. This story is a disgusting act from a human being. Cowards. This is why I prefer animals to humans.

I swear, I hate people. Humans are the cruelest mammals on the face of this planet. I cannot understand how anyone can dump an animal to fend for itself. All of the animals that we have been blessed with have been abandoned. I am so happy that Tinsel is being taken care of. I hope Tinsel gets a loving and caring family.

Very sad wee dog story but spare us the rest of the sob story. Like this bit - 'It was really hard for staff to watch the CCTV and see this incident unfold"..............Does she think we don't know they put down thousands of dogs per year? And this bit - " 'Dumping them is not acceptable" Well neither is killing them. At least... AT LEAST, the person in the car took the dog to a safe(ish) place, and the fact it's in the news will probably ensure THIS dog will get a new home. What about the others?

'Dumping them is not acceptable -' Im sorry but they did the right thing, it could have been dumped anywhere or treated really badly, Or given to anyone who cant look after it properly. Yes they should have taken the dog inside they didnt have to say they were the owners. Im sure being 6 months of age they will find the dog a good home

I didn't - couldn't - read the article. I've seen enough hardship in life but an animal's misery or a child's tears is still too much for me to handle. Since we're social animals, rejection and abandonment are our worst nightmare, no matter how old we are. It's the same for dogs - actually it's even worse for them- since they haven't the slightest clue why they were left and they don't know who to turn to. I wish Tinsel's owners a very lousy Christmas and even a worse new year. I hope they feel rejection and abandonment at their most vulnerable , at some point in their lives. Maybe then they'll realise what kind of misery they've caused the poor little puppy .
