Hoisin Flounder from Cooking Light Magazine, March 2013

StumbleUpon

Fish doesn’t show up very often here, much to Dudette’s relief and joy. Hubby and I both like it, but all it took was one bad school experience to put her off the stuff for life.

Every once in a while, however, something comes up that warrants putting her taste needs aside and stepping up to the plate. Today is one of those days.

I don’t talk about family matters all that often, but today’s a little different.

Today we are joining together to help raise awareness for Heart Disease.

Kim of Cravings of a Lunatic lost her Mom to heart disease when her mother was 47, and Kim was 15. Each year on the day her Mom passed she shares stories and photos of her Mom. This year she joined forces with Jen of Juanita’s Cocina, whose life was also touched by heart disease when her Stepfather had a heart attack. Jen’s Stepfather is alive and well more than a decade later, and for that, Jen is thankful every day.

The ladies got in touch with other bloggers to ask them to share their own stories about how heart disease has touched their lives. So today we share stories and recipes from our hearts to yours, in memory and honour of Momzie, Kim’s Mom. We hope you will share your stories with us today as well.

You see, it runs in my family. I lost two of my grandparents to heart disease. My father has had a couple of heart attacks as well as bypass surgery. My mom has heart issues as well. Mom’s trouble could be linked to an arthritis drug she took years ago, but we’ll never know.

In remembrance of Kim’s mom, and to honor my parents who are both alive and well despite their own heart issues thanks to a healthy diet and lifestyle, I put fish on my family’s table. Poor Dudette.

The Process

This is one of Cooking Light’s Super Fast meals, ready in about 20 minutes, especially if you use the boil-in-bag rice. It’s a simple matter of sauteing fish and vegetables.

The only thing I did differently was to use broccoli since Dudette doesn’t like snow peas and to leave off the mushrooms since Hubby and Dudette don’t like them.

The Verdict

I tried to hide what dinner was going to be from Dudette so her first reaction was to let us know that she didn’t like the chicken. Ah well. Hubby came clean and she gave me her standard look of betrayal while finishing her minuscule piece of flounder.

Hubby and I both enjoyed this very, very much. The glaze is delicious. and would work well on just about any kind of meat.

What I’d Do Different Next Time

Not a thing.

Looks like I made something similar… I made salmon for today's event. Lucky for me… my kids love seafood so this was not a problem at dinner time… Poor Dudette.. I need to eat more fish… flounder is a favorite too. :) Sorry to hear about the heart diseases in your family… it's always a scary thing.

Your post made me smile so much. I am just thinking about poor dudette and feeling like I should send her something to make up for this personal afront on her diet. You should send me your address and I'll send her some candy to make up for it. Lol. I honestly just laughed my head off which I needed after a heavy day reading some of these amazing posts.

Thanks so much for joining us and sharing your story about your family. I am so thankful your dad has come through his issues so well, warms my heart. I know so many meds can affect people's hearts so that was interesting to read about your mom as well. It's wild to think about what things we took in years past can have such an effect later on. And a tad scary to be honest.

I love this dish. I am a big fish lover. I have no idea why I don't post it more. I think it's due to me liking mine so plain it doesn't photograph very well. I need to start getting creative like you did. This would be lovely with that hoisin on it. And I'd gobble up every bit of the broccoli as well.

Bill is my Dudette (well, Katie is, too!). I'm thinking he "might" eat this…I need to get him to eat a fish beyond salmon. I'm sorry for the heart disease that has affected your family…it's so pervasive….

  18. This sounds so good! Hubby made flounder last night but I think the Asian flavors here would work better.

  20. Healthy and wonderful! Kinda sucks to be Dudette sometimes, I guess, but if she had to have fish, I think that this would be a good one to have!

I'm very glad that your parents are still with you and that they are taking care of themselves. The best gift they could give themselves. And Dudette. See, Dudette, there's an up side to eating fish! :)

I remember seeing this recipe, and thinking this might actually get me to like fish. I love anything with hoisin!

  23. Wilde in the Kitchen says:

I've been enjoying reading everyones heart healthy meals today, yours is totally something I would cook for myself. Hoisin is my weakness. Though BF won't touch anything from the sea, so this would be all mine.

  24. Susan says:

I love flounder, but never pair asian flavors with it. It sounds absolutely lovely.

Wow, you are touched with a lot of heart disease also in your life. I am sorry. Thanks so much for sharing and coming together with us. Your recipe looks amazing!!

I could happily eat fish every day. The problem lies in the expense and find interesting recipes for it that don't smother it in a cream sauce. This one sounds like ti totally fits the bill!
