Description
Physical Description
Adult Female: Bill: bluish Body: Underparts: whitish.Adult Male: Bill: bright pink Body: Flanks: finely barred, silvery Upperparts: black with purple gloss.
Habitat
Shallow freshwater swamps , marshes, and small lakes .
Vegetation: freshwater lakes and ponds, freshwater marshes • Maximum Elevation: 1,200 meters • Foraging Strata: Water • Center of Abundance: Lower subtropical: lowlands, lower than 500 m.; subtropics. • Sensitivity to Disturbance: Low
Typically found in a lake at a mean distance from sea level of 1,355 meters (4,444 feet).[1]

Biology
Diet
Seeds, roots , and vegetative parts of aquatic plants , grasses, and sedges. Although it is considered a diving duck, it feeds mostly on aquatic vegetation from the surface of the water.
