Messi is still the world's best player... maybe I can be No 2! Man City hot shot Aguero says Argentina team-mate was always destined for greatness

Sergio Aguero believes his Argentina team-mate Lionel Messi is still the best player in the world.

The Manchester City striker has ambitions to become one of football's top players but says that, for now, the number one spot is firmly in the grasp of his countryman.

Aguero and Messi first played together as teenagers and have since become two of the most feared attackers in the game.

Messi has won the Ballon d'Or award three years in a row but Cristiano Ronaldo and Franck Ribery are front-runners to pick up the trophy next January.

'Messi is a very important person to me,' Aguero told BBC Match of the Day Magazine.

'Lionel is the best footballer in the world, but to me we are friends first, always. We started playing together when we were just 17 years old.

'He was always going to be the best, always. He’s the number one and maybe I can be number two. Not yet though, I’m doing OK but I have to keep training hard and playing well.'

Man City have had the most prolific attack in the Premier League this season, scoring 34 goals in total, and Aguero has been their in-form striker.

Since appointing David Moyes as manager, Man United have struggled for form, winning only half of their league games, and Aguero does not regard the local rivals as City's main competitors.

'For me it’s Chelsea,' said the 25-year-old when asked about City's biggest title rival.

'But there are four teams who can challenge – us, Chelsea, Liverpool and Man United. It’s always complicated when it comes to United. But for me it’s Chelsea and maybe Liverpool. And Arsenal! Now they’re very good.'

Don't agree that Messi is the best player to lace boots because he has NEVER performed at World Cup finals unlike PELE, MARADONNA AND CRUYFF. The other strange thing is, yes he has scored a lot of goals at Barcelona and even spookier so does Ronaldo now he is playing in the Spanish league. Wonder if that's a coincidence because he didn't do that every year at Man U. Don't get me wrong Messi and Ronaldo are great players just not as good as the other three.

Messi IS the best player in the world! Ronaldo is the second best! Zlatan is over-rated. But if the noisy little reds from down the road actually READ the article Kun says 'maybe I can', he never said he WAS! If you watch the little man, YES, YES he can! He is awesome and if Bale is worth 80m then Aguero represents a fanastic investment by Manchester City! I wouldn't take 80m and Zlatan in exchange for Aguero, in fact I just wouldn't sell him, irreplacable!

Aguero is awesome...easily one of top 5 in world. But Ronaldo is the man right now for taking his country to the WC finals on his jack. Messi is not superior or inferior. Both have skills that are extra-ordinary.
