X-Files star Gillian Anderson is thrilled that her gay sister Zoe, 30, will now be able to marry her long-time partner in their home city of Chicago, which  will allow gay marriage for the first time from June.

‘I’m all for gay marriage. My sister married her wife last year here and I was obviously at the wedding,’  the 46-year-old actress, said at the Live Letters event in Notting Hill. ‘Now it’s not illegal in Chicago, they’re going to do it again there.’

Gillian’s 19-year-old daughter Piper Maru will  be bridesmaid.

Vanessa Redgrave’s new film The Butler – about racial segregation in America – has revived memories of her hot-headed days  as a radical political activist.

‘There’s a certain amount of my own life that’s gone into this – phone calls I’ve made to Martin Luther King, Vietnam protests,  the FBI, it’s all part of my life,’ said Vanessa, 76, at a screening of the film at the US Embassy last week. ‘It’s so freaking wonderful to be reminded of it all .  .  .’

Jeremy's toughest role yet - playing Colin Firth

Dashing War Horse actor Jeremy Irvine has revealed how he spent hours studying Colin Firth – and even changed the colour of his eyes – for his latest role.

Colin, 53, dramatically lost weight to play prisoner of war Eric Lomax in The Railway Man, and Jeremy followed suit – shedding more than two stone to play the younger version of Colin’s character in the movie.

‘I also wore brown contact lenses as Colin has brown eyes,’ said Jeremy, 23, pictured with Colin at last week’s London premiere of the Second World War film.

‘I’ve got big lips that look like bum cheeks so I had to try to minimise them so they looked like Colin’s.

'And a lot of work went into getting the mouth right – you’ve no idea how much I’ve studied Colin’s mouth!’

Hotheaded? On the contrary, Redgrave's political acts sound well-considered and on the right side of history.
