The Simpsons give late actress and voice artist Marcia Wallace a heartwarming tribute during Christmas themed opening credits

|

Sometimes one needs to press pause in life to really see what's going on.

And that's exactly what viewers had to do in order to catch a glimpse of the touching tribute to Marcia Wallace during Sunday's episode of The Simpsons.

The late actress's much loved character of Bart Simpson's teacher Mrs. Edna Krabappel was shown with angel wings during a blink-and-you-missed it moment of the animated series' winter wonderland opening credits.

The flash of a scene also featured an homage to the show's late writer Don Payne, who can be seen floating with a halo and wings next to Krabappel.

Simpsons executive Al Jean told E!, '[W]e wanted to do a tribute to two terrific people, Marcia and Don. The episode was sadly Don's last.'

Don passed away in March, while Marcia died in October at the age of 70 of complications from pneumonia.

The series originally honoured the Emmy winning actress during a November episode by having a sullen Bart write on the chalkboard, 'We'll really miss you, Mrs. K.'

Bart often found himself in trouble in the eyes of his fourth-grade teacher who was romantically linked to Simpsons' neighbor Ned Flanders.

Mrs. Krabappel also dated her school principal Seymour Skinner, Moe's Tavern proprietor Moe Szyslak and Krusty the Clown.

Before she lent her voice to Mrs. Krabappel, Marcia was well known for playing receptionist Carol Kester on the 1970s sitcom The Bob Newhart Show.

She also once played Marcia Brady's teacher on an episode of The Brady Bunch.

Producers plan on retiring the character of Mrs. Krabappel.
