Jose Mourinho will target Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric when he makes his expected return to Chelsea this summer.

Mourinho confirmed his departure from Real Madrid last week, and hopes the former Tottenham star will join him on his expected journey to West London.

The Madrid midfielder could cost Chelsea around 30million, just shy of what Mourinho paid for the Croatian last August, according to The Sun.

A Chelsea insider said: 'Mourinho's very keen to clinch a deal for Modric.

'He knows it will be tough but if anyone can make it happen, we believe Jose can.'

Modric has not lived up to his price tag in Spain, but Mourinho has put faith in the 27-year-old, making 31 appearances this season.

His superb goal in the Champions League semi-final second leg at Old Trafford is what he will be remembered for if he does depart the Bernabeu, scoring just seven minutes after being brought on by Mourinho with his side 1-0 down and heading out of the competition.

But with just three goals elsewhere and several substitute appearances, Modric may not be in the new Madrid manager's plans.

Chelsea have history with Modric, having made two bids in 2011, both rejected by Tottenham.

He won't buy anyone. He will have input into the buying decisions made by Emelano and Abroamovitch. Left to his own devices Jose would probably build his team from a strong defence in the old Arsenal tradition. Chelsea need a genuine Makelele and a skillful beast upfront to intimidate defences. Terry might get a friendly cuddle of greeting but that relationship will soon be cooler because Jose is not afraid to make hard decisions and regrettably Terry will have to take one for the team and give up his club captaincy.

Mourinho is signing loads of players for Chelsea. Not bad when you consider he hasn't even been appointed manager.

Why should Chelsea FC pay 30m for a Real Madrid failure? I take that back, "Why should we take a Real Madrid failure, at all, never mind, the cost?" I am still very sceptical and nervous about this 2nd marriage with Mourinho.
