'They all dress the same': Fashion designer Roberto Cavalli takes aim at American women for 'wearing too much black' and 'trusting Michael Kors'
|
Roberto Cavalli has taken aim at American women's style of dress and says that it relays an obsession with being thin and working out.
Mr Cavalli told Style.com that American women ‘all dress the same,' and that while they are very warm and polite, they ‘have to [become] a little more open-minded.’
The designer, 73, also said that he feels New York City women need to start wearing less black – a color choice he thinks they favor only for its slimming effects.

His comments were provided as part of an interview that, ironically enough, was centered around the opening of his newest U.S. boutique - the Just Cavalli New York flagship, located in the city's SoHo neighborhood.
Mr Cavalli says that American women’s taste differs from their European counterparts because they ‘trust designers like Micael Kors. He’s one of the biggest copy designers in the world.’
He elaborated saying that he even writes ‘comments on [Michael Kors’s] Instagram’ that accuse the designer of copying Cavalli designs.
‘He’s not American fashion. He is international fashion made in America,’ the designer continued.
American women’s fanfare of designers like Mr Kors makes them look like ‘they all dress the same,’ Mr Cavalli said.
The Italian designer, who presented his first collection in 1970 and later launched Just Cavalli in 2000, also took issue with New Yorkers’ love for black clothing.

‘[It’s] like that because everyone wants to look skinnier,’ Mr Cavalli said of New Yorkers’ penchant for the slimming color.
‘Black is the color people wear when they’re gym fanatics. And it’s true, if you wear black, you look at least five kilos less than what you are,’ he said.
Mr Cavalli thinks that ‘black is negative, it’s not positive…I think designers who are Italian or French are a little more colorful.’
The Roberto Cavalli label is primarily manufactured across Europe – a distinction that the designer says has hurt his American expansion, rather than helped.
‘I remember before, America was the number-one place to appreciate things made in Italy of made in France. Now, they love everything made in China,’ he said.
