Player of the day: West Ham boss Alan Curbishley said Craig Bellamy scored a "fantastic" goal and you also think pretty highly of the Welshman's performance today. He is out in front with a mark of 8.97, edging out fellow goalscoring strikers Fernando Torres and Dimitar Berbatov.

Sir Alex Ferguson and Roy Keane shake hands after a dull match and walk down the touchline side by side. Three points for United. Not convincing but they're heading in the right direction and Cristiano Ronaldo will be back for their next game away to Everton. Sunderland will hope to snap their losing run at home to Reading in a week.

1908: Manchester United earn a late corner. They play it short. They keep it by the flag. They win another corner.

1907: Roy Keane's exasperated on the touchline. His team are going nowhere as United professionally run down the clock.

1906: Three minutes of added time. Even if they had 103 minutes you wonder if Sunderland could break down United.

1904: Wes Brown comes storming up the right but his boomer of a shot is blocked. It was a handball but Danny Collins had no chance of getting out of the way. Sunderland protect their goal thereafter... just.

1902: Five minutes plus added time to go. United are in an armchair at the moment.

1900: Roy Keane has taken a leaf out of Sir Alex Ferguson's managerial book when it comes to chewing gum with menace on the touchline. He's sporting an understandably stern look.

1858: A response from the Manchester United bench. Nani is withdrawn for John O'Shea.

1857: Two Sunderland substitutions. Liam Miller and Anthony Stokes on. Ross Wallace and Dickosn Etuhu off. That means four former United players are now out there for the visitors.

1855: Own Hargreaves had a pop shot from distance earlier that stayed low. This one's from further out and is rising, rising, rising just over.

1852: We are into the final 15 minutes. If Sunderland don't score in that time it will be a third successive league loss for them, and a fourth in all competitions.

1850: Despite going behind Sunderland fans are bellowing a rendition of 'You'll Never Walk Alone'. It is getting right up the noses of some of the more boorish home supporters.

1848: Dickson Etuhu gets close to meeting Ross Wallace's free-kick from the left, but not close enough.

1847: GOAL Manchester United 1-0 Sunderland
Nani's corner into the near post is met with a glancing header from Louis Saha ahead of two Sunderland defenders and keeper Craig Gordon. That is the deadlock broken.

1846: Ross Wallace's effort from the free-kick hits the top of the jumping wall and is cleared.

1845: Daryl Murphy replaces the hard-working Kenwyne Jones ahead of a Sunderland free-kick in an attacking position.

1843: A fierce drive by Owen Hargreaves which bounces just in front of Craig Gordon. The Scot fumbles the effort but gathers at the second attempt from the on-rushing Paul Scholes, who catches the keeper. Needless from the Manchester United man.

1841: A second change for Manchester United and Chris Eagles makes way for Darren Fletcher.

1839: Foul by Michael Chopra on Patrice Evra and the sight of a yellow card has Roy Keane racing to the touchline to remonstrate with Martin Atkinson.

1835: Edwin van der Sar is out quickly to punch away a bouncing ball ahead of Kenwyne Jones, although the Sunderland striker would have needed the elasticity of a gymnast to get anything on that and turn it on goal.

1832: Best moment of the match. Sunderland attempt to play their way out of defence but only play their way into trouble. The ball is worked to Louis Saha and in the blink of an eye he turns and shoots. Craig Gordon is down low to his right to turn the ball behind. Excellent all round - apart from the initial over confidence in defence.

1826: Lax defending again as Danny Higginbotham heads straight at Carlos Tevez. The Argentine's low shot is saved by Craig Gordon.

1824: Bad play from Nyron Nosworthy on the retreat. His wayward pass finds Chris Eagles but the Manchester United man fails to make him pay as his cross sails harmlessly over the box.

1822: Talking of Andersons, James Anderson is in the Old Trafford house. It seems Sunderland fan Paul Collingwood is spreading the Black Cat word through England's one-day squad as he is in the away end with Anderson, Monty Panesar, Alistair Cook, Ian Bell and Kevin Pietersen.

1820: The action resumes and Louis Saha is on for his appearance of the season. Anderson makes way.

Royals boss Steve Coppell has "alarm bells clanging in my brain" at the state of his defence. In stark contrast Alan Curbishley revels in a "fantastic" victory and hails the efforts of Craig Bellamy, who has not given him a "minute's problem".

1753: Manchester United are beginning to turn things up... a bit. Patrice Evra's on a direct run but his shot from distance is blocked.

1751: Another save for Craig Gordon, and another comfortable one, this time from Chris Eagles.

1750: A first chance on goal and it goes to United. Anderson collects the ball in midfield on the left and picks out Carlos Tevez with a raking crossfield pass. Craig Gordon saves at his near post.

1748: REACTION Fulham 3-3 Tottenham
Angry? Deflated? Shocked? You name it Martin Jol is it and his assessment of the game is blunt. "We only have ourselves to blame and we have to cut out this sort of rubbish and these mistakes." Will he get the chance to oversee the eradication of those mistakes though? Lawrie Sanchez goes all Ian Fleming on us: "It's like a James Bond film where you think why doesn't the villain kill him and when they don't he eventually comes back to bite them. That's what we did."

1746: REACTION Newcastle 1-0 Wigan
Sam Allardyce hopes the win, and more significantly a first home goal since February, can kickstart Newcastle's season. "Now we've got the bogey off our back we'll hopefully get more goals," he says. Opposite number Chris Hutchings is aggrieved by the refereeing as "decisions went against us". He also dismisses the Kevin Kilbane red card incident as a "clash of heads".

1743: Be careful if you've been with us all day - too much time in front of a computer can damage your dexterity. Gareth Southgate liked Boro's "ruthless streak" and Steve Bruce didn't like anything apart from Cameron Jerome. "He was our only player to come out with any credit," he says. "We were awful."

Wanderers boss Sammy Lee concedes people are probably getting fed up of him taking positives from defeats, but he likes his team's "commitment". The fact the winner came from a set-piece has left him particularly annoyed.

United hand a debut to Anderson up front alongside Carlos Tevez, with Louis Saha only making a bench that also features Michael Carrick. Ryan Giggs was ruled out after picking up a hamstring injury in training on Friday. Sunderland manager Roy Keane hands debuts to new signings Kenwyne Jones and former Manchester United trainee Danny Higginbotham.

A first goal at home for Newcastle since February and three points which send them up

Everton climb up to second and it's a Merseyside one-two. Bolton are right down at the other end, a place off bottom spot.

The Reds go top of the Premier League for the first time under Rafael Benitez and it is their best start to a league campaign since 1998. It will be a long, hard season for Derby.

1649: GOAL Fulham 3-3 Tottenham
Spurs only have themselves to blame and Fulham draw level with an amazing goal. Diomansy Kamara latches on to the ball with an acrobatic overhead kick and his effort loops high over Paul Robinson into the top corner.

Joleon Lescott climbs high between two Bolton defenders at the back post to head in Thomas Gravesen's corner.

1646: Juusi Jaaskalainen goes walkabout in the Bolton goal but recovers to get a big mitt to Mikel Arteta's attempted clip into the box.

1644: Thomas Gravesen and Mikel Arteta work well on the Everton right near the corner flag, but Leon Osman fires the pull back from the Portuguese high.

1642: With all this action it is hard to focus on the two draws. Thomas Gravesen's introduction has helped Everton, but no way through for them. With the help of an extra man Newcastle are pushing for that elusive goal.

Dave Kitson is fouled in the box by Robert Green, but the West Ham keeper makes amends with a fine spot-kick save to deny Kevin Doyle.

Terrible defending from Andy Todd and Fernando Torres pounces to score.

1634: GOAL Liverpool 5-0 Derby
Stephen Bywater parries Dirk Kuyt's shot from the left straight to Andriy Voronin who makes no mistake from close range.

1632: Thomas Gravesen, sporting the number 10 shirt instead of the 16 he wore when last in Everton blue, slides a pass forward for Andrew Johnson on the right, but the striker can't get his shot on target under pressure.

1631: Inside the final 20 minutes everywhere and four games look in the bag. Different story at the Reebok and St James' Park where we will attempt to concentrate our energies.

1625: Chris Baird deflects Dimitar Berbatov's goalbound shot behind for a corner. Antti Niemi is having a shocker. He races off his line to the edge of the area but collides with Dejan Stefanovic and the ball falls for the Bulgarian.

A first Tottenham goal for the wonderful Gareth Bale. He is fully deserving of the score after racing on to Robbie Keane's flick in the middle of the park. The Welshman bears down on goal and shoots under Antti Niemi.

1620: And another debut. Marcus Bent is on for Wigan with Jason Koumas making way. Antoine Sibierski was sacrificed after the red card with Emmerson Boyce coming on.

1619: The yellow-booted Thomas Gravesen makes his second Everton debut. Bald midfielder for bald midfielder as Lee Carsley trots off.

1618: Steve Bruce clearly doesn't like what he sees at Middlesbrough and in an effort to change it makes three changes. Gary McSheffrey, Mehdi Nafti and Garry O'Connor are on.

1615: Tottenham's Steed Malbranque hits the post with a half volley off his weaker left foot after pouncing on Antti Niemi's parry.

One-sided and that's the three points in the bag for Liverpool. Javier Mascherano slides in to dispossess Robert Malcolm, the ball breaks for Fernando Torres who runs at the Derby defence before slotting home from the edge of the area. The boys in the BBC Score studio like it... a lot.

Everton fail to clear an El Hadji Diouf cross and Nicolas Anelka watches the dropping ball like a hawk before thundering a rasping shot in off the underside of the bar.

1609: GOAL Reading 0-2 West Ham
Craig Bellamy and Matthew Etherington play a one-two on the edge of the Royals area after a sweeping counter-attack and the latter pings his shot high past Marcus Hahnemann.

1608: RED CARD Wigan
It is a second yellow for Kevin Kilbane after he catches Alan Smith with his arm. Contentious. His first card was for a foul on Mark Viduka. It could have been even worse for the Latics! When Emile Heskey is booked for complaining Steve Bennett reaches for his pocket and inadvertently pulls out another red instead of a yellow.

1607: Two changes at half time - one at Bolton and one at Newcastle. Wanderers defender Gerald Cid is injured and replaced by Andy O'Brien. Injured Magpies striker Mark Viduka is replaced by Shola Ameobi and not Obafemi Martins.

1606: A fizzing shot on the turn from Dimitar Berbatov. From 25 yards he fires a dipping effort on goal which Antti Niemi fumbles over the crossbar.

1605: Same old story at Anfield where it's men against boys. Liverpool sweep forward on the left and the ball ends up with Xabi Alonso on the right of the goal in space. He hooks a tame effort over.

1604: The action resumes.

Player rater: Everton always seem to rank highly and it is no different this weekend. New boy Yakubu is leading the way with a mark of 9.80.

Alvaro Arbeloa pulls the ball back to the edge of the box at the end of a serene seven-pass move where Ryan Babel shows enormous cool. He takes his time, steps inside the desperate defence and picks his spot.

1534: Chance for Tottenham to make it three, but Jermaine Jenas dawdles. He cuts inside a sliding tackle and straight into a Carlos Bocanegra last-ditch tackle.

1533: Referre watch. A first yellow card of the day from Rob Styles and it is fully deserved from Fabrice Muamba for a sliding tackle. That weekend off has clearly benefited the man in the middle. A weekend off?

1530: GOAL Fulham 0-2 Tottenham
That's how to finish. Dimitar Berbatov is released on the right by Robbie Keane and he holds off Dejan Stefanovic before blasting the ball home. BBC Radio 5live pundit Steve Claridge is simply purring over that one.

1528: May need to rethink that stuff about Michael Owen's predatory instinct. He profits from an Andreas Granqvist slip at the back but loops his shot from a bouncing ball high while clean through.

A high, floated free-kick from Xabi Alonso evades everyone before nestling in the back of the net. It was from 40 yards, maybe more, and County keeper Stephen Bywater clearly expected Dirk Kuyt to get something on it.

1519: Panic at the back for Tottenham. Paul Robinson makes a hash of a low cross from Hameur Bouazza's cross and Steven Davis thumps the rebound high and over.

1516: Newcastle's Michael Owen has the ball in the net - but it won't count. He was offside, although there was more than a glimpse of that old predatory instinct in the box.

1515: Cheers for the heads up about the scores (no rabid abuse either, which is always nice) at the top and apologies to Newcastle fans who found themselves 1-0 down to an invisible goal. All got a bit hectic.

1510: Injured Liverpool duo Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard have a watching brief high in the stands at Anfield. Both chewing gum. Not much chat. The Reds are on top.

1508: Mark Viduka flicks on a long ball and Michael Owen is free on the left. The Newcastle striker bears down on the area, but his low shot is tipped round the post by Chris Kirkland.

1507: GOAL Reading 0-1 West Ham
On their last visit to the Madejski the Hammers were, well, hammered. It won't be 6-0 this time. Lee Bowyer pounces on poor Reading play in midfield and releases Craig Bellamy who shoots across Marcus Hahnemann from the right.

1504: Referee Rob Styles has had an immaculate first 90 seconds in the game between Middlesbrough and Birmingham. Just the next 90 minutes or thereabouts to negotiate.

1503: The London derby has started and former Tottenham player and present day Score pundit Garth Crooks puts the mockers on the visitors: "They won't lose today."

1502: All matches but the London derby are up and running.

1501: A minute's silence at Craven Cottage in memory of Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed.

1500: A minute's applause at the Reebok for Rhys Jones and Sevilla player Antonio Puerta.

1457: Players out everywhere and at Bolton it's a birthday party for the Reebok. It is 10 years old today and Everton were the visitors on that occasion as well. A certain Gary Speed, then a sprightly 27, was playing for the Toffees.

1455: Newcastle new boy Habib Beye gets a rousing reception as he's introduced to the Toon Army. The former Marseille man looks a bit non-plussed by all the fuss.

1437: We can expect goals at the Reebok. Bolton have scored in their last 19 league games, while Everton have kept only one clean sheet in their last 12.

1434: We've tipped our hat in the direction of Fulham and Tottenham, and down towards the bottom Reading and West Ham are also in need of points. The Royals have never lost at home to the Hammers and are already one up on their rivals having held on to full-back Nicky Shorey this week.

Bolton keep Kevin Davies on the bench, despite his recovery from a hamstring injury, with Nicolas Anelka up front, and are unchanged. Everton give a debut to record £11.25m signing Yakubu alongside Andrew Johnson, but their other pre-deadline arrival Thomas Gravesen is a substitute. Phil Jagielka and Steven Pienaar also make their first Premiership starts for the club, with Leon Osman and Tony Hibbert making way.

Dejan Stefanovic makes his Fulham debut after signing on Friday. Hameur Bouazza and Antti Niemi also start, but there is no place for striker David Healy who is left on the bench. Antony Gardener is missing for Tottenham, but Younes Kaboul is fit to replace him. Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov start in attack and Michael Dawson is on the bench.

Liverpool make five changes from their midweek win over Toulouse with Steve Finnan, Javier Mascherano, Ryan Babel, Xabi Alonso and Fernando Torres all coming in. Derby, who went out of the Carling Cup on penalties to Blackpool in midweek, do the same with boss Billy Davies bringing back Andy Griffin, Claude Davis, Andy Todd, Craig Fagan and Tyrone Mears.

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate names the same starting line-up that drew with Newcastle as Gary Neil's Friday move came too late in the day for him to make his debut. Birmingham makes one change from side that beat Derby 2-1, Sebastian Larsson replacing Gary McSheffrey in attack.

Newcastle make five changes to the team that defeated Barnsley in the Carling Cup, but Michael Owen keeps his place and starts alongside Mark Viduka. Wigan make seven changes to the team that lost in the Carling Cup to Hull, though new signing Marcus Bent has to be content with a place on the bench.

Manager Martin Jol came barrelling through the gates in a brusque, businessmanlike manner, while further down the line Steed Malbranque gave a wry smile as he walked off the bus at his former club.
