Card-in-a-Box and Card-in-a-Box Box!
Today's post features the step-by-step directions for creating this wonderful paper creation!
The Card-in-a-Box has become a favorite papercrafting project! I became familiar with this technique during a blog hop and found the instructions on Splitcoast Stampers. Click the link to find links to the websites and to view my first Card-in-a-Box Project.
Supplies and equipment needed:
Scoreboard (using Martha Stewart)
Bonefolder
metal ruler
Paper trimmer
Scissors
Strong Adhesive tape and liquid glue (using Glossy Accents)
1 sheet 8 1/2" x 12" heavy cardstock
2 pieces coordinated patterned paper
enough to cut...
(1) 2 1/2" x 6 1/4" inside panel
(3) 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" outside panels
(6) 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" (squares) sides, front (inside and outside)
(1) 2 /12" x 6 1/4" panel of white or light cardstock to be used for sentiment and signature
Step 1 Lay cardstock on scoreboard with long side against the top of the scoreboard.
Step 2 Score the cardstock at 2 3/4", 5 1/2", 8 1/4", and 11". Tip--when scoring a long strip, I use a metal ruler to keep the score line straight. Corrected error...in my original post, I had a wrong measurement! The measurements that you see now, are correct! PLEASE NOTE....I printed these instructions and found that the printed version retains the incorrect information!! The 8 1/4" prints the incorrect measurement of 8 1/2"....Please change the measurement on the printed instructions.
Step 3 Lay scored cardstock on paper trimmer and cut away a 2" strip. Save strip for later use.
Step 4 Place the 6 1/2" x 12" panel on scoreboard and score at 2 3/4"
Step 5 Cut along the shorter scored lines up to the 2 3/4" scored line. The scissors and bonefolder are used to show where the cuts were made.
Step 6 To create a tab to hold the box together, cut a small section of the 1" margin at an angle. To clarify this step...you will cut away the 1" shorter piece. As you cut the piece away, cut into the longer section at an angle to create the tab. In the original instructions from the link above, I had a little trouble understanding what to do. The video was helpful, but I had to make a box myself to completely get this step correct.
Step 7 Use the 2"x 12" strip to create 2 inserts for the embellishments to the box. To do this, find the end with the 1" score. Measure a strip of 4 3/4" including the 1"score end. Cut. Tip--Look at the photo and see there are now 1"folds on each end of the 4 3/4" strip.
Step 8 Cut the 4 3/4" strip into 2 pieces of 1" x 4 3/4"
Step 9 Put a strong adhesive on the short sections of the strips. The strips will be adhered to the inside of the box. Use a strong adhesive because these strips will be holding a large number of embellishments. I am using Terrifically Tacky Tape. Tip--When folding all the scorelines, use a bonefolder. This make the folds neat and sharp.
Step 10 It is time to cut the coordinating patterned paper to decorate the box. Take a moment to look at the sample box at the top of the post. Think about where you want to place the patterned paper.

I am using Carol Wilson Fine Arts, Inc SDD102C because of the pretty pattern and especially because of the border.
Step 11 Cut 2 pieces at 2 1/2" x 6 1/4" (1 pc) white or very light to use for sentiment/signature
(1 pc) patterened paper
Step 12 Cut 6 upper pieces at 2 1/2" x 2 1/2".
I am using a lightly patterned paper, source unknown. There is a faint border that I will incorporate. Tip--I am using the lighter paper on top so that my embellishments will be the focus of the card, not the paper.
Everything is assembled and ready to create the card box base.
Step 13 Fold the card base. Determine which side will be the outside and inside. You are looking at the inside of the card base. Notice the placement of the long patterned piece of paper. I used regular double-sided tape to adhere the patterned paper. However, I used the Tacky Tape on the tab. Look carefully where the Tacky Tape has been applied, it is on the outside of the card base.
Step 14 Inside card base. I have added the 3 squares at the top of the card. Please note that I have positioned the border at the top. When the box is made, these square pieces will be the pieces that fold back. I want the border facing out. Refer to box photo at top, if needed. Please notice that you do not see the Tacky Tape on the tab. That is because the tape was applied to the front of the tab!
Step 15 Turn the card base over and adhere the patterned paper and sentiment/signature panel.
Tip--If you plan to stamp/decorate the plain panel, this could be done before attaching it to the card base. I chose to cut an additional piece, stamp, decorate, and then adhere it over the original panel.
Step 16 Fold and create the card box base. It should look like the photo.
Step 17 Adhere the strips to the inside of the box. Note the placement of the strips. Place the 1" tabs against the front and back of the box. This provides the center sections for embellishments.
EDITED (this section was added after my original post)....I wanted more area than the two strips to add embellishments. So I cut the two strips in half, trim the tabs, and made 4 strips.

Step 18 It is time to decorate your Card-in-a-Box! Have fun expressing your creativity!
These embellishments were in my crafting stash! I have lots of flowers, all kinds of flowers! The rosettes were made from Tim Holtz rosette cutting dies. I used the Sizzix cutting dies Flourishes #8, #9, #10 to use as a filler after adding my embellishments.
I wanted to use these botanical stickers, but they are extremely fragile. I solved that by carefully gluing the stem and flower together with Glossy Accents. To make the flowers more durable, I carefully applied Glossy Accents to the tops of the flowers. Then, used Glossy Accents to adhere the flowers to the card box.
Step 19 Create the sentiment/signature panel. I used several techniques on this panel. I used watercolor pencils on the image. For all the information about this panel, please click the link...
Close up of the embellishments used on the Card-in-a-Box! Tip--Be sure to use a strong adhesive as you apply the embellishments. The card will be folded many times. You don't want things to be falling off! I used Glossy Accents on all the embellishments. When used as a liquid glue, hold the embellishment to the surface for a few seconds. The glue will act quickly and hold the embellishment. Allow to dry thoroughly. This make take an hour or more. Depending how much glue was used.

I wanted a special way to deliver the Card-in-a-Box. A regular envelope just didn't seem the best way. So I decided to create a box to hold the Card-in-a-Box. Well, this turned out to be much more difficult than the card! To find out how I created the box, please click the link.....
