First Lady Michelle Obama today tweeted her support to Robin Roberts - hours after the GMA host revealed she was in a long-term relationship with girlfriend Amber Laign.

Mrs Obama, 49, congratulated Robin, 53, and Amber, 39, in a tweet that read: 'I am so happy for you and Amber! You continue to make us all proud.'

Writing the note while on vacation with the first family in Hawaii, Mrs Obama signed the tweed 'mo' to show the message was from her and not her staff.

Robin interviewed President Obama in May 2012 and the Obamas have been keen supporters of the veteran journalist.

After Robin underwent a life-saving bone marrow transplant while battling myelodysplastic syndrome., she was overwhelmed as the Obamas shared in the celebration of her return to the ABC show in February after 174 days off air.

The First Lady said: 'We just want you to know that the whole Obama family - we've been thinking about you and praying for you and rooting for you every step of the way.

While the President added: 'You've been an inspiration to all of us and we couldn't be happier doing what you do best... Robin, it's great to see you back in that chair and we're all excited to start our morning with you once again.'

Robin then interviewed Mrs Obama upon her return to GMA.
