Modern Family's Ariel Winter gets behind the wheel to work on her driving skills... ahead of her sweet sixteenth next month

If she manages to get her licence, sixteen might be a little sweeter for Ariel Winter.

The 15-year-old actress, who earned her learner's permit in August, was spotted working on her driving skills in a black SUV in Los Angeles on Monday, just one month before her 16th birthday when she can formally apply for her licence.

The Modern Family star was accompanied by her older sister and guardian Shanelle Workman, 35, as she tried to improve her driving prowess before taking the test.

It seems as if the Speed Racer star and sibling have a bit more brushing up to do as she apparently parked the black Suburban vehicle in a handicap spot.

The soon to be 16-year-old wore dark sunglasses as she drove the streets of Los Angeles although she didn't appear too confident behind the wheel, despite being legally allowed to drive since August.

Her guardian Shanelle seemed to echo those sentiments of worry as she tilted her head back into the headdress of the passenger seat.

A seemingly happier time for the teenage star was when she had passed her permit test back in August.

Ariel took to her Instagram to post a selfie of herself smiling as she held the certificate that would allow her to get behind the wheel with a guardian.

She captioned the photo: 'I PASSED. I PASSED. I PASSED I PASSED I PASSED! I am now a permitted driver.....be scared. Actually don't be...I'm a safe driving nerd'

The Kiss Kiss Bang Bang actress currently lives with her older sibling after her mother Chrystal lost custody last year.

Shanelle is also an actress who has guest starred on several television series and has done voice work for various video games.

Back in October, court documents revealed that Ariel's father Glenn Workman had approved of his daughter's current living arrangement following allegations that her mother Chrystal had engaged in inappropriate sexual conversations with the 15-year-old.

Despite the custody battle, the young star is doing more work besides acting on Modern Family as she is the voice to Penny Peterson in the upcoming Mr. Peabody & Sherman animated film that is set to release on March 7, 2014.
