On hearing the news, Liam Payne said: 'This tops an amazing year for us! We're so excited to have the biggest selling album in the UK this year, especially with a record we are all so proud of.

'We'd like to thank everyone who has bought the album, it really means a lot to us.'

The band's third album beat Emeli Sande's debut Our Version Of Events - which was actually released in 2012 - in the last week of December.

Sandé's LP dropped behind One Direction's with sales of 683,000 copies, but has sold 2.07 million copies to date.

According to the Official Charts Company’s final sales data of 2013 Midnight Memories hit the top spot with 685,000 sales.

Write an article on 1D and use a picture of just Harry Styles? I'm sure they've done a lot of PR together, should be a few photos of the band floating around, DM...

I don't know One Direction (too old to listen their music) but yesterday I watched a TV program about them in order to know who they are. They live a fascinating story. They were very lucky guys.

Its such a good album, less bubblegum pop ish compared to the previous two... And all of the boys co-wrote on it, infact Harry wrote most of Happily. They're such hard workers and so down to earth that they deserve their success, Well Done boys!

Only because it's Christmas and they're constantly on ITV shows or referenced on ITV in some way? Duh?

i think it may be due to their appearance as well as the large population of teenage girls?

Might sound bias as a huge One Direction fan but I was really impressed with Midnight Memories, I've loved both their previous albums and they've had "grown up" songs before but on this album the songs and lyrics are even better and sound rather different to the One Direction most people know, give it a listen before you judge!
