If there's any pop culture image that stands out from 2013, it's Miley Cyrus and her ever-protruding tongue.

She's been sticking it out of her mouth recklessly at any opportunity for the past few months but if you think the 19-year-old doesn't have a care for mouth maintenance, you're wrong.

Looking slightly washed out and fatigued, the party fan took the opportunity to oil the same tonsils new boyfriend Kellan Lutz appeared to be tickling the other day, as she walked through the crowd.

She has owned 2013 so it's only fitting Miley closed out the year by performing at Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest in New York before the ball drop.

While she has made headlines for her barely there outfits and provocative stage performances this year, the star was relatively conservatively dressed in sparkly gold trousers, a matching crop top and a huge white fur coat with a long train.

Miley admitted the freezing New York temperatures had played a part in her choice of attire as well as getting rapped over the knuckles for previous provocative looks, explaining: 'This is the most clothes I’ve been in in 2013. Because of the cold weather and standards and practises, this is what we came up with.'

However, Miley admitted she was nervous, telling Ryan: 'I'm a little nervous tonight, I can’t believe a billion people are going to watch this, this is a big moment for me.'

And she opened up about her favourite moment from a tumultuous year which saw her engagement end and her album storm the charts as she shed her Disney image once and for all.

She said: 'The biggest moment for me was the VMAs, it was the beginning of a chapter for me.'

And despite as many downs as ups, Miley added: 'I hope to have just another year just like this one.'

She performed Get It Right and Wrecking Ball in Times Square and despite briefly sticking out her tongue to lick Ryan she otherwise kept it in her mouth and didn't attempt to twerk.

Miley previously explained she only sticks her tongue out when she gets embarrassed.

She told Barbara Walters in an interview for ABC special, Barbara Walters Presents: The 20 Most Fascinating People of 2013, 'I get embarrassed to take pictures. That’s actually the truth.

'I'm so embarrassed because people are taking pictures of me, and I just don 't know how to - I don't know how to smile and just be awkward, so I stick my tongue out because I don't know what else to do.'

I feel sorry for her, everything she does is such a cry for attention! I wish someone would give her the attention she wants so she can stop acting foolish! She will regret this stage in her life so much looking back!
