Euro 2012 Golden Boot winner Fernando Torres says Spain’s teamwork enabled him to become the first player to score in two European Championship finals.

Torres, who came on as a substitute in the 4-0 win against Italy, scored his side’s third goal before making the fourth for Chelsea team-mate Juan Mata as Spain became the only team to win three international tournaments in a row. He also scored the winner against Germany in the 2008 final.

The striker, who entered the action with 15 minutes remaining as a replacement for Cesc Fabregas, told Marca: “You can't ask for more – it is the work of the team and the togetherness that has brought us here.

“You always want to win more and more, but right now we have to enjoy this. We have won by a distance against a great team like Italy. We are very happy. This was the objective that we had at the start of the tournament. We will reflect on what today means in Spanish football history.

“We have dominated from start to finish and enjoyed a magical evening. Now we can say that national teams of the future will concentrate on us to try and make history.”

Torres was one of six players to score three times in the tournament, but claimed the Golden Boot because he had also provided an assist and his goals had come in only 189 minutes of playing time – he started three of Spain’s six matches.

“Football is like this. This is my third Euros - in the previous ones, I played almost all the games and scored two goals. In this one I have played less but won the Golden Boot," he said.

“Football can be just or unjust like that, depending how you look at it, and that is why we like it so much.”
