He has gained quite the reputation as a tough man due to the roles he has taken on over the years.

But on Wednesday Jason Statham decided to get his New Year off to a different start – as a surf star.

The 46-year-old showed off not only his very muscular torso but also his surfing skills as he hit the waves in Hawaii.

The English born actor looked more than at ease on the waves, revealing his hidden talent as he rode them effortlessly.

As he made his way from the water he couldn’t help but grin, clearly pleased with his own efforts.

It’s not clear were Jason’s 26-year-old girlfriend Rosie Huntington-Whiteley was, however they were spotted just a few days after Christmas taking a stroll along the beach in Malibu alongside their Daschunds Dolly and Peggy.

The couple, who have been dating for three years,  shook off split rumours earlier this year and seem happier than ever and while they have yet to have children – it seems it could be on the cards in the not so distant future.

The actor, who plays a father in his new film Homefront - opposite Kate Bosworth and James Franco -, said how much he enjoyed the paternal role.

'Being a father was a lot of fun actually.' the actor told the Daily Express. 'It’s something that isn’t too much of a stretch for me to be honest.

'I’m naturally a protective person to those close to me. So, who knows?'

In the film he plays a former DEA agent who moves to a quiet town with his family but becomes entangle with a local meth druglord.
