Diseases of the kidney remain a major cause of illness and death in the United States. The National Kidney Foundation states that more than 26 million Americans are affected by kidney and urologic diseases, and millions more are at risk. 

The doctors in our Nephrology Department offer expertise in the diagnosis, education and treatment of conditions related to the kidneys, including:

Springfield Clinic Nephrology physicians provide comprehensive nephrologic care to patients for acute and chronic kidney diseases, high blood pressure, urinary tract infections, kidney stones, pre- and post-transplant, and dialysis education.  Our nephrologists treat these conditions and disorders related to the kidneys, and the treatment options vary greatly.  We want our patients to live life with as few symptoms as possible, so we work with patients to find the best treatment for their condition.

Springfield Clinic partners with Memorial Medical Center and SIU HealthCare to provide the full spectrum of kidney and pancreas transplant patient care. As part of that partnership, our Nephrology Department offers specialty transplant nephrology services. These services involve evaluation of potential transplant recipients and follow-up nephrology care for patients after transplant to ensure the long-term functioning of the transplanted kidney.

Inside each kidney, tiny structures called nephrons filter blood to remove waste products and extra water. In addition to filtering waste from the blood and assisting in the balance of fluids and other substances in the body, the kidneys perform other vital functions. These functions include:

  • Production of hormones that help to regulate blood pressure and production of red blood cells
  • Assisting in converting vitamin D into a form that can be used by the body’s tissues
