Sandra Bullock, who plays medical engineer Ryan Stone stranded in space in Gravity, is in the running for the coveted award.

Bullock joins Melbourne-born actress Cate Blanchett, 44, to vie for the title of Best Actress, who plays the troubled socialite Jasmine in Woody Allen's comedy drama.

Blue Jasmine has been nominated in a total of three categories, one for Allen's Original Screenplay, and the other for English actress Sally Hawkins, 37, who plays Jasmine's sister Ginger.

Blanchett has already won a Best Actress Bafta for Elizabeth in 1998 and a Best Supporting Actress Bafta for Meredith Logue in The Talented Mr Ripley in 1999.

But the Baftas would not be complete without a couple of British actresses amongst the lineup.

And Emma Thompson, 54, is one of the leading ladies to take that crown with her portrayal of Mary Poppins' creator P.L.Travers in the Disney film, Saving Mr. Banks.

The film is also nominated in two other categories, Outstanding British Film and Outstanding Debut For A British Writer - Kelly Marcel (Writer).

Thompson has not won a Bafta since her awards for Best Actress in Sense and Sensibility in 1996 and in Howards End in 1993.

The three women will also be competing against Amy Adams as Sydney Prosser in American Hustle and Dame Judi Dench as the title character in Philomena.

Dame Judi's nomination puts her one ahead of Meryl Streep, who was overlooked in the best actress category for August: Osage County.

This is why award 'ceremonies' can't be taken seriously. Bullock panting and annoyingly screaming her head off for near 90mins doesn't equate to 'good', let alone 'award' winning acting. As for Thompson, hasn't she basically been playing the same character for near 20 years? Don't get me started on the others. Bafta has no credibility, as they are obvious in their bias toward anything 'Brit'. Then again, neither do any of the others.

Emma Thompson all the way! She was sooo perfect as P L Travers and really added so many dimensions to that character. I think Sandra did a good job in Gravity too, although I just didn't like the film as much.

I loved Cate Blanchett ..she was great in Blue Jasmine. But then again--she's great in everything as far I'm concerned. She is the kind of actress whose pain you can feel across the screen. LOVE HER!

I wouldn't mind Cate Blanchett and especially Emma Thompson winning best actress award :D .As for most of the other categories, although Gravity has the most noms.............. I hope 12 Years a Slave will win most of the awards. It was a sad yet memorable & amazing movie.

I thought Gravity was a brilliant film and it only had 2 actors in the film. The cinematography was very good as well, it really made the viewer feel what the character felt, isolated. Sandra's acting was amazing, as was Clooney's.
