But the Baftas would not be complete without a couple of British actresses amongst the lineup.
And Emma Thompson, 54, is one of the leading ladies to take that crown with her portrayal of Mary Poppins' creator P.L.Travers in the Disney film, Saving Mr. Banks.
The film is also nominated in two other categories, Outstanding British Film and Outstanding Debut For A British Writer - Kelly Marcel (Writer).
Thompson has not won a Bafta since her awards for Best Actress in Sense and Sensibility in 1996 and in Howards End in 1993.
Practically perfect in every way: Emma Thompson receives a nod for Saving Mr. Banks
Good pals: Emma Thompson received a Bafta nomination, however renowned actress Meryl Streep did not for her leading role in August: Osage County
The three women will also be competing against Amy Adams as Sydney Prosser in American Hustle and Dame Judi Dench as the title character in Philomena.
Dame Judi's nomination puts her one ahead of Meryl Streep, who was overlooked in the best actress category for August: Osage County.
Surprise nomination: Amy Adams came as a surprise Best Actress nomination for her role in American Hustle
Bafta veteran: Dame Judi Dench is one of four Brits to be nominated this year
Other Brits nominated include Chiwetel Ejiofor, as Best Actor in 12 Years a Slave and Sally Hawkins as Ginger in Blue Jasmine.
The winners will be announced at a ceremony at London's Royal Opera House on February 16.
