Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert have been dogged by rumours of a marriage breakdown over the past two years.

And after Blake was recently spotted cosying up to a young blonde starlet at Usher's birthday party the rumour mill went into overdrive with sources claiming the country singer's marriage was headed for the divorce courts.

But on Friday, the 37-year-old Voice mentor took to Twitter to rubbish the allegations surrounding his marriage in a series of mocking tweets.

The country singer decided to adopt a humorous approach against the continued rumours, telling his 4.3 million Twitter followers: 'I just read back to back NEW stories that @mirandalambert and I are having a baby, divorcing, cheating and feuding with @cher. Must be true!'

Referring to claims that a divorce between the country megastars would cost him $40 million dollars Blake poked fun with a mocking tweet saying: 'If it costs 40 million dollars to get divorced then how will we ever afford it?!!! We had that money set aside for healthcare!!!'

The couple met in 2005 whilst Shelton was estranged from but still officially married to Kaynette Gern, a long term girlfriend whom he wed in 2003.

In 2009 the Boys Round Here singer proposed to Miranda Lambert after seeking and receiving her father's blessing.

After their 2011 wedding, Blake expressed his joy saying, 'I wanted to be married to Miranda from the day I proposed. Finally it is official!'

However the star of NBC's The Voice has been candid about the state of his marriage, saying it is not perfect.

He told CBS show This Morning in April 2013: 'We had our ups and downs for damn sure along the way. I just could not imagine her not being in my life. I just couldn't get over her, I know I can't.'

Fellow country singer Miranda has not yet commented on the latest allegations or replied to her husband's tweets but the 28-year-old blonde has spoken out previously to deny previous rumours about the state of the duo's marriage.

I actually do believe many celebrities cheat. They are adored by many and if the spouse at home tells them to take out the garbage and doesn't tell them how fabulous they are 1000 times per day, well, there is always someone else who does..

I give this marriage another year tops. Check out some of the blind item gossip sites... Blake is doing to Miranda what he did to his ex wife

I would be highly surprised if any of the rumors are true. First, Blake knows Miranda can and WILL kick his a$$. Second, if you have ever seen Blake watch Miranda when she is performing he gets the most beautiful look on his face that shows his soul is connected to her's and that he is completely devoted to cherishing her for the rest of his life. What I wouldn't give to find a love like that.

I feel bad for them. I'm not saying what they did was right (they way they got together) but supposedly Blake had gotten with his first wife when he was 18 or 19 and you can see how that sort of thing falls apart. People do stupid, awful things but they shouldn't be shamed for it for seven years later. This isn't the Scarlet Letter. These two have been together for several years and seem to live quietly, but the tabs still won't leave them alone and leave the past in the past. And I saw the photo, he didn't seem to be "cuddling" with the blonde.

Their marriage is in trouble. Big trouble. Years ago I would just ignore stories like this, as they were based on a teeny bit of truth and a huge amount of speculation. But nowadays there are just too many well-placed people who are willing to be an "anonymous source" for some cold, hard cash. (Turns out that the tabloids were 100% correct about Bruce and Kris Jenner, and Miranda Kerr and Orlando Bloom, to give but two very recent examples.) And I have seen several recent magazine headlines where both Miranda and Blake separately insist, "Divorce is NOT an option!" Which we all know means, "Yup, we're circling the drain." If you are happily married, you don't make statements like that.
