Omri Casspi enjoying boost in playing time
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(12:53 am ET) Rockets forward Omri Casspi played his second strong game in a row Wednesday against the Kings, following up a 15-point game with 20 points in a 119-98 win.

Casspi played 33 minutes for the second straight game, scoring his 20 points on 9 of 15 shooting. He made a pair of 3-pointers in five attempts, while adding 12 rebounds to finish with his first double-double of the season.

Casspi has seen his playing time rise thanks largely to injuries in the Rockets' frontcourt. For the season, however, his production remains pretty pedestrian, as his role has come and gone. He is averaging 8.3 points per game in 43 appearances.

Dwight Howard strong again in big win
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(12:46 am ET) Rockets center Dwight Howard continued his strong play Wednesday against the Kings, recording his third 20-10 double-double in a row in a 119-98 win.

Howard was his typically efficient self, scoring his 26 points on 10 of 13 shooting. He struggled at the free-throw line, however, going just 6 of 17. Howard added 13 rebounds and four blocks, while dishing out one assist and picking up one steal in 32 minutes in the blowout win.

Howard has continued his strong play in the month of January, averaging a season-high 19.8 points and adding 10.7 rebounds per game.

Darren Collison may sit with toe injury
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(12:42 am ET) Clippers head coach Doc Rivers said that guard Darren Collison may have to sit a few games to allow his sprained big toe heal, NBA.com reports.

"He’s struggling," Rivers said. "He couldn’t move and you kind of had a feeling, and I was right, that they were going to go [Jannero] Pargo and [Ramon] Sessions and start going pick-and-rolls. He’s trying but you could see him laboring up and down the floor. It’s tough. At some point, we may have to make a decision to sit him down as well."

Collison has been filling in as the primary point guard with Chris Paul out, but it may be in the team's best interest to park him on the bench to give him time to heal.

"I really think [sitting Collison out is] what we may have to do," Rivers said. "I’m looking at D.C. and I’ve had that injury myself and it doesn’t get better playing. We’re going to have to sit and decide how bad is it? Is it something that is not that bad? We’ve got to make a decision, soon."

Jimmer Fredette gets hot in blowout
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(12:26 am ET) Kings guard Jimmer Fredette saw a bump in playing time Wednesday against the Rockets, as the Kings were down for much of the game and dealing with injuries in the 119-98 loss.

Fredette scored 14 points in 18 minutes, and he was incredibly efficient in doing so. All of Fredette's shots came from behind the three-point line, as he went 4 of 6 shooting. He added two rebounds and one assists, while turning the ball over twice in the loss.

Fredette was playing more early in the month of January, but had not topped double figures in minutes played in four games before Wednesday. He is averaging 7.2 points per game in the month of January, compared to just 5.3 for the season.

Ben McLemore plays 35 minutes in loss
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(12:20 am ET) Kings guard Ben McLemore scored in double figures for the first time in more than three weeks Wednesday against the Rockets, as a number of high-profile injuries opened up a larger role for him.

With Rudy Gay going down with an Achilles injury early, McLemore played 35 minutes off the bench in the blowout loss. He scored 11 points on 3 of 10 shooting, with three 3-pointers, and added one rebound in the 119-98 loss.

McLemore has seen his role disappear for stretches recently, but could see a big boost in playing time if Gay has to miss time. He is averaging just 4.5 points per game in the month of January.

Derrick Williams steps up thanks to injuries
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(12:11 am ET) With the Kings' stars hit hard by injuries, reserve forward Derrick Williams stepped into a big role Wednesday against the Rockets.

Williams played 40 minutes off the bench with Rudy Gay leaving early with an Achilles injury. Williams scored 22 points on 7 of 15 shooting in the game, and added a season-high 11 rebounds for his first double-double.

Williams has been much better since the trade to Sacramento, averaging 9.9 points per game in 28 appearances. If Gay is forced to miss extensive time with his Achilles injury, Williams could step into the starting lineup moving forward.

Ray McCallum Jr. plays a bit in blowout
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(12:06 am ET) Kings rookie guard Ray McCallum Jr. has seen a bit more playing time recently, thought he appeared in just his 10th game of the season Wednesday against the Rockets.

McCallum appeared in his second game in a row, but played just eight minutes in a 119-98 blowout loss. He scored two points on 1 of 3 shooting, though he did add four assists without a turnover in his garbage time.

McCallum's inconsistent playing time has clearly hurt his production as a rookie, as he is shooting just 4 of 13 on the season.

Trevor Booker chips in in return
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(1/22/2014) Wizards forward Trevor Booker returned from a one-game absence due to an ankle injury Wednesday, and he provided a lift in a loss to the Celtics.

Booker played 20 minutes in the overtime loss, and put up solid numbers off the bench. He scored nine points on 4 of 6 shooting, and added eight rebounds and a pair of assists, as the Wizards fell, 113-111.

Booker has been productive at this times season, but his playing time has been inconsistent. He is averaging 7.6 points and 7.3 rebounds in 22.0 minutes per game in the month of January.

John Wall posts triple-double in losing effort
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(1/22/2014) Wizards guard John Wall tried to do it all Wednesday, but ultimately came up short in a 113-111 overtime loss to the Celtics.

Wall filled up the box score in a major way, recording just his second career triple-double in the loss. He racked up 11 rebounds and 10 assists to go with 28 points, though he shot just 9 of 29 from the field as he struggled with his shot. He also turned the ball over six times in 44 minutes, as the Wizards fell just short in overtime.

Wall has been doing it all for the Wizards all season, and his numbers are up recently thanks to a pair of 30-point efforts. He is averaging 24.8 points, 58 rebounds and 8.2 assists per game over the last five.

Gerald Wallace fills it up in win
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(1/22/2014) Celtics forward Gerald Wallace appeared in the starting lineup for just the fifth time Wednesday against the Wizards, and he came up with a solid game in a 113-111 overtime win.

With Rajon Rondo sitting out to rest his knee, Wallace took on a big playmaking role in the game. He dished out a season-high nine assists in his 40 minutes of action, while turning the ball over just twice. He filled up the box score well otherwise, scoring nine points and adding six rebounds, one block and four steals.

Wallace has not made much of an impact consistently for the Celtics this season, averaging just 4.3 points per game, his lowest total since 2003-04.
