K. B. Ganapathy: India’s Presidential Election: Remembering V. V. Giri and “Conscience Vote”
When the time for electing the President of India by the electoral college comprising MPs and MLAs comes, after the statutory term of five years ends, as it is now, I thought the incumbent President Mrs. Pratibha Devi Singh Patil would be UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi's choice for a second term too. After all, she was hand - picked by Sonia Gandhi for the office — apparently more for reasons of returning a favour in a big way for personal services rendered. Wonder why it did not happen and her choice fell on Pranab Mukherjee, the oldest and most loyal Congressman of them all. Read On

T. J. S. George: Manmohan Singh and the Tragedy of India; Fortunately, the Future Looks Good
The big mystery of our times is why Dr. Manmohan Singh carries on the way he does. Every scandal, every policy failure, every problem that festers due to inaction brings him discredit — for no fault of his. He is allowed little real power and he exercises less. Why does he hang on? It was the economic crisis of 1991 that catapulted him to fame. Today's economic crisis has shown him up as a tragedy, with Standard & Poor's latest report specifically mentioning his ineffectiveness. The tragedy of the good and capable Dr. Manmohan Singh is the tragedy of India. Read On

K. B. Ganapathy: B. S. Yeddyurappa’s Battle for Survival
Look at the Congress and JD (S). They do everything legal or otherwise to protect their leaders — whether it is a sex scandal, corruption or black money in Swiss Bank. In case of Yeddyurappa it looks, after serving BJP and RSS for 40 years he has realised that the very party he worked for and helped to come to power for the first time in the South, has literally disowned him at the most testing period of his political career. A clear case of “Et tu brute”. Being at the threshold of 70, what future awaits this much - hounded old man, only time will tell.

Politics: Political Future of Yeddyurappa and Siddharamaiah
But the BJP High Command seems to behave like Julius Caesar, who said of his wife in great moral flourish: Caesar's wife must be above reproach. A Sri Rama of a High Command. Reason: “When we are fighting a corrupt government at the Centre ...” This comes from the mouth of a High Command which did not back the Congress (UPA) to pass the Lokpal Bill — whatever may be the reasons for it. It should have realised, in the case of Karnataka and Yeddyurappa, what's sauce for the goose need not be sauce for the gander. After all, it is politics. Inner - party ethics and rules change in order to take a pragmatic approach to win elections. Read On

CBI arrests Janardhana Reddy
The CBI team from Hyderabad raided Reddy's house Kuteera in Bellary and escorted him to an undisclosed location for questioning, it is learnt. Srinivasa Reddy was also questioned. Meanwhile, another team of CBI sleuths raided Reddy's residence Parijatha in Bangalore simultaneously. The CBI raids come a day after Reddy's close confidante, former Health Minister B. Sriramulu resigning from the MLA's post. The Reddy brothers were upset after the BJP High Command did not favour their inclusion in the Ministry, in the wake of a Lokayukta report indicting them in illegal mining. Read On

Sriramulu Quits: Resigns as MLA: Turmoil in BJP
"I am completely innocent and have maintained an honest and transparent life throughout my political career spanning nearly 20 years. I will undertake a Swabhimaan Yatra throughout the State shortly," he added. Sources say Sriramulu is expected to float a regional party and claims support of 15 MLAs. However, Sriramulu said that he will stay in the BJP till Sadananda Gowda is the Chief Minister. "I am not resigning from the party, till Sadananda Gowda continues as Chief Minister. We'll not disturb the party, we'll cooperate with him," he said. Read On

Politics: Congress Leader Questions Lokayukta Report’s Credibility: A well - planned strategy to dethrone Yeddyurappa?
An interview with Congress leader B. K. Hariprasad published in newspapers claims that the Lokayukta report indicting Yeddyurappa was prepared as per national BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani's instance. He has also said that the report was used by Advani to remove Yeddyurappa and some others in the Cabinet whom he disliked. Hariprasad further says that Justice Santosh Hegde is a publicity - monger and is politically motivated. Hariprasad has been actively involved in politics since the past three decades and has maintained a clean image, both personally and politically. As such, his comments cannot be brushed aside lightly. Let us just glance through the events that took place recently. Read On

BJP: A House divided cannot stand: Musings after Yeddyurappa's fall
What could be the reason for Advaniji's hatred, as revealed from his language, towards Yeddyurappa the RSS and BJP man who was primarily responsible to bring BJP to power in South by his own Machiavellian, Chanakyasque skills? In Kannada, we have a word for it. Vyamoha. BJP's MP for the fourth time Ananth Kumar, who is said to be his protégé – become - foster son, a member of his extended family is the reason. We know Ananth Kumar was Advaniji's candidate for Chief Minister from the day Yeddyurappa assumed charge as Chief Minister on May 30, 2008. And what are Ananth Kumar's credentials? Less said the better. I had earlier given the example of what happened to Congress by making Gundu Rao the Chief Minister. Read On

Sadananda Gowda elected CM, Jagadish Shettar Deputy CM
Udupi - Chikkamagalur MP D. V. Sadananda Gowda was elected as the Chief Minister of Karnataka after the Legislators' Meet at Capitol Hotel opted for a secret ballot. Sadananda Gowda polled 63 votes while Shettar got 55. After the efforts of the Central Observers to bring in a consensus among the factions failed, they went for secret voting. The meeting, earlier scheduled for 11 am, was deferred to 12 noon as none of the MLAs had reached the venue by 11.15 am. At the meeting held under the presidentship of senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley, there was a divide over the mode of electing new CM. Read On

Yeddyurappa Resigns
Putting an end to three days of suspense and speculations, Chief Minister B. S. Yeddyurappa today, i. e. on 31st of July sent his resignation by fax to BJP President Nitin Gadkari at 7.42 am. He also expressed his "full support" to the party. In the letter, Yeddyurappa has cited astrological issues as the main cause, according o sources close to him. Read On

Doomsday Report and fall of Yeddyurappa
I remember the price paid by Indira Congress when it sacked its own Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Anjaneyalu, paving way for NTR of Telugu Desam and here in Karnataka when it sacked Veerendra Patil to install Bangarappa and the price paid by Congress as a result. H.D. Deve Gowda of Janata Dal became the CM. Those who refuse to learn from the past mistakes are bound to perish repeating them. And finally, what the stars foretell for Yeddyurappa? Read On

Hark, BJP High Command: Don't act in haste and repent at leisure
Well, one cannot wish away the family (Parivar - tantra) simply because one is in politics and has occupied a high position. Of course, one should not indulge in crony capitalism or nepotism. Here, the charge is that Yeddyurappa is practicing these evils to benefit his family. But, prove it in a court of law. After all, what one does, whether Sonia Gandhi or Yeddyurappa, should be within the ambit of the law of the land. Which is why it is the cardinal principle in law that howsoever high you are, law is above you. Why fret and fume?
If the Congress party Spokesman Manish Tiwari thinks that Yeddyurappa is the “Cauvery of Corruption”, then it can also be said that Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh is the “Ganges of Corruption”, what with three of his coalition colleagues in jail, as also some bureaucrats. Read On

Lokpal Bill: It’s UPA Government’s time for introspection
Thank God, now there is a ray of hope for the country from being driven to a kind of people's uprising as we saw in 1975, led by Jayaprakash Narayan (JP). The Civil Society calling itself as “India against Corruption” led by Anna Hazare has set out to do what exactly JP had set out to do in 1975. Our only fear is that Anna Hazare's movement too should not lead us to another Emergency of the kind Indira Gandhi had declared, turning India into a dictatorship, snuffing our democracy. Read On

K. B. Ganapathy: For God’s Sake, Stop this farce
When many disputes of complex nature are resolved by this method by mutually consenting parties, why not this one? After all, both Yeddyurappa and Kumaraswamy are ready and consenting to swear before Lord Manjunath. Why come in their way? Who is afraid? Certainly not the persons involved. It is other politicians and our religious leaders. But now, it is Yeddyurappa who has backtracked and fooled the people taking cover under the advice of Swamies and Nitin Gadkari. Read On

India’s Finest Hour Has Come - A Wake – up call to dirty politicians
No matter the cat is black or white as long as it catches rats. No matter Anna Hazare has a different agenda and Baba Ramdev is a businessman as long as they catch thieves. And who are those thieves? They are the thieves who have been looting our country quietly since 1964, after Nehru passed away. Not that thieving, call it corruption, had not existed during Nehru's time. Certainly we have heard of Dalmia scandal, Defence Jeep Purchase scandal involving the then India's High Commissioner in London and later Defence Minister V. K. Krishna Menon and, of course, Nehru's favourite Chief Minister of [undivided] Punjab Pratap Singh Kairon. Nehru defended them all in the Parliament. Read On

Congress Party’s Albatross in Karnataka: H. R. Bharadwaj
I don't need an astrologer or even a Kodi Mutt Seer - soothsayer (whose predictions always go wrong anyway, especially in the case of B. S. Yeddyurappa, Karnataka's BJP Chief Minister) to predict that Congress party would get less number of MLA seats than JD (S) in the 2014 or the next Assembly election (whichever happens early) if the present Governor H. R. Bhardwaj continues in the Gubernatorial office which is filled with dry gun - powder intended to blast out of office the BJP government. Read On

Remembering Devaraj Urs
My father looked after all three of his daughters as sons. Those were our childhood days. We went around the villages in bullock cart carrying the National Flag for election campaign. In those days, campaigning was not as grand and pomp as it is now. My father sold his land to fund the election campaign. This money would be spent on publicity, pamphlets and conducting functions. The politicians then did not distribute cash. A very down – to - earth person, he solved the grievances of the public on – the - spot. Read On

Karnataka Politics: Why blame Congress and BJP High Command?
According to this editor, may be, we got first class leadership in Dharam Singh and H. D. Kumaraswamy. The present one, B. S. Yeddyurappa, of course, is already neck - deep in corruption charges. So where do we go from here looking for first class leadership? Ask the editor who has rubbished the present Congress and BJP High Command, simply because one failed to impose President's rule in Karnataka and another failed to dismiss B. S. Yeddyurappa from the office of Chief Minister. Read On

Indian Avatars of Corruption and Concerns!
In India, this is an Age Of Corruption. Like we had the Golden Age of Guptas, Mauryas and Vijayanagar during their rule. The ramification of the roots of corruption and its dimensions, its adverse impact on the development of our country, are felt not by the crony capitalists, the politicians, members of political families and bureaucrats but by the people at large. Partisan Governor H. R. Bharadwaj must leave Karnataka
Looking back and looking into the present, it is clear to Karnataka people who are not partisan that there has never been a Chief Minister who has worked his way up from the grass - roots level, from the village level, worked with the farmers for over four decades, climbing rung by rung to a position where he is today. Sadly, the crab - culture of his own partymen has been haunting him like a scourge ever since he became a Chief Minister after suffering the ignominy of being reneged by the one whom he trusted — H. D. Kumaraswamy. Read On

T. J. S. George: The Big Winner? Not Mamata or Jaya! The Losers? Not Buddha or Karuna!!!
The Congress princeling made a couple of visits to Tamil Nadu, taking care not to meet his ally Karunanidhi. Nor did he do anything to put life into the dead horse that is the Congress party in Tamil Nadu. The big political story from this election is that the Congress is losing ground across India. Musings by JP: Corruption leads to Promotion
Years ago, I happened to see a popular Kannada film that had Amrish Puri, the late Hindi film actor and that great character actor, Loknath. Puri is cast as a shy, coy, village Patel, who wants to be a dashing rake but doesn't have the guts and is scared of his wife. Loknath is the man – about - town, corrupt to the core. And there is this scene when Puri demurs about going to a party where the local neta, a couple of girls and a film producer are all swilling drinks. Loknath says, "Alla kano, yellaroo jaribiddare, naavu yake yeddu ninthukolbeku?" That's the trouble with us! We would rather slip and slither down with the rest! Read On

Congress should recall the Rolls Royce Joke
A rich man buys a Rolls Royce and drives it away from the showroom. After 10 - km, the car stalls. He summons the engineers. After inspecting the car, they say, "Sorry, sir, there is no engine." The surprised man asks, "Then how did it run this far?" "On the company’s reputation, sir." Unlike the Rolls Royce, the Congress party is blissfully unaware that it is still “running” on its past reputation. The party did have a reputation in its early past and an honest one at that! People were proud to vote for the Congress back then. But that reputation has been showing signs of cracks. Read On

The BJP high command should not forget that at this point of time neither a Shettar, no matter a Lingayat, nor a Santoshji of RSS will be able to face the ensuing December election to ZP and TP with any measure of success.
