Leonardo DiCaprio’s Overcrowded Project Slate – Separating Fact From Fiction

Leonardo DiCaprio’s Overcrowded Project Slate – Separating Fact From Fiction

TheWrap takes a look at all the movies the Oscar-nominated actor will never star in

The phrase “Leonardo DiCaprio bought X movie to star in” should come with an asterisk. According to the latest report, DiCaprio will next play a Southern attorney involved in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics bombing. Don’t hold your breath for that one.

The same site that wrote up that report has claimed Warner Bros. or DiCaprio bought eight different projects for DiCaprio to star in over the course of the last year. Eight movies in one year, none of which are close to getting made.

Here are the CliffNotes:

DiCaprio will play a rancher in a Depression-era drama. (Feb. 21, 2013)

DiCaprio will play President Woodrow Wilson. (Sept. 16, 2013)

DiCaprio will play Viking king Harald Hadrada. (Aug. 6, 2013)

DiCaprio will play another detective. (May 21, 2013)

DiCaprio will play Jesus Christ in a new biopic. (December 25, 2013)

OK, we made the last one up.

Fact: Warner Bros. is eager to find a new movie for DiCaprio because the studio, home to DiCaprio’s Appian Way production company, wants to win the actor his first Oscar. DiCaprio has been nominated for an Oscar four times, and has yet to win. He could break that streak this year, but it would be for a Paramount movie.

Fact: According to those with knowledge of the studio’s thinking, Warner Bros. is most optimistic about two of the aforementioned projects — the Wilson biopic and the ‘King Harald’ movie. But, keep in mind, DiCaprio was either going to star in or contemplated starring in all eight of those movies. At least according to the sources of a particular reporter.

Warner Bros. and Appian Way may have bought all of those projects, but at a certain point don’t you have to ask yourself: “Is Leonardo DiCaprio really going to star in this movie?” When he’s bought three movies to star in within five weeks, isn’t it obvious he won’t star in a couple of those?

Then again, that site’s first post about DiCaprio in 2013 had this headline:

Leonardo DiCaprio Taking ‘A Long, Long Break’

How’d that work out?

  • Kay.

We get it. Y’all have beef with Deadline. Anything else?

  • Mass

It’s impulse decisions. DiCaprio did say that he wanted to take a break. When asked about it in a THR round table he said: “I did take my break.”

DiCaprio probably does say that he wants to star in those pictures, but that’s all impulse. He still has to find writers and directors that he likes to make the picture. Remember how long it took him to get people for the WOLF OF WALL STREET picture? Years!

Perhaps by the time he finds writers and directors he decides that he doesn’t want to star in it at all.

Warner Bros wants to get DiCaprio the Oscar? They aren’t going to do that by making films that are all about Style over Substance. DiCaprio needs to branch further outside his box. Hell, do a really small Indie drama like freaking NEBRASKA for Christ sake, that’ll get you something. While he is an extremely fantastic actor, the characters that he plays are too typical. They are just written with my style than substance, with the exception of a few of his roles. His Django role was the best role for an award, in addition to his performance in The Departed. Ironically neither of which he was nominat for. In fact, most of the films listed above seem like sure fire films to get him nominated, but extremely unlikely for him to actually win. They are just typical DiCaprio roles- that isn’t necessarily a Bad thing, unless he’s gunning for the Oscar.
