team communication for the 21st century

Imagine all your team communication in one place, instantly searchable, available wherever you go. That’s Slack.

These companies are changing the world. And, along with hundreds of others, they use Slack.

Create open channels for the projects, groups and topics that the whole team shares.

Channels increase transparency by putting knowledge in everyone’s hands. Discoverability, complete history & search across all channels is built in.

Channels include messages, files & comments, inline images & video, rich link summaries and integration with the services you use everyday, like Twitter, Dropbox & Google Drive.

“Our team is loving Slack. I’m very excited about it.”

Andy Yaco-Mink, Director of Engineering, BuzzFeed

Slack is full of thoughtful touches to make your working life simpler, more pleasant, and more productive.

  • Autocomplete makes mentioning your teammates quick and painless.
  • Support for both Apple & Google emoji styles means it works everywhere.
  • Configurable notifications for desktop, mobile push and email keep you as informed as you’d like.

“Slack is the communication platform that was missing from our operation. It’s improved the day-to-day lives of people who work for the same company across our locations.”

Greg Storey, President / Partner, Happy Cog

Everything is perfectly in sync as you move between your desktop, iPhone, iPad, or Android device.

Powerful search & archiving means you can forget when you need to: we’ll remember for you.

  • Support for private groups and 1:1 direct messaging gives you complete flexibility. Private things stay private, so just the right people see them.
  • The ”ambient awareness” that comes from increased transparency cuts down on the need for meetings.
  • Internal email becomes unnecessary as desktop & mobile messaging, file sharing and notifications fold into one place.

“I feel really comfortable with how information is flowing now in Slack. I can see how conversations progress, where decisions get made, who is involved and what different people are adding to the conversation.”

John Jackovin, CEO, Bawte

“We no longer wonder what’s happening on the front line, we know. It makes our relationships deeper because we discover things about each other and we're in touch with exactly what’s happening.”

Ken Schafer, EVP Retail, Tucows

“We were using a combination of Skype, chat and email for communication. Now we use Slack and our email volume has dropped by 80%.”

Simon Peck, Co-Founder & CTO,
The Hunt

“I am so impressed with Slack. The attention to detail is so absolutely thorough, the messaging throughout the app is helpful, covers odd corner cases, but somehow still manages to feel light-weight.”

Sally Carson, Co-Founder, Pinoccio

New Bug!   Reply to your Comment!   Task Created!

There’s a good chance that half your email is from your tools. Having all that flow to Slack instead gives you one centralized archive that everyone can see.

Slack integrates with dozens of services and more are being added every week.

“All our notifications come into Slack – event logs, errors, code check-ins, sales calls, support requests. It makes it really easy to tell what everyone is working on without meetings and status updates. Now 90% of our internal communication is done through Slack.”

Kristian Reynolds, Co-Founder, KeyPay

There are also simple incoming & outgoing webhooks and an open API so you can create your own integrations.

Two built-in native file types let you create files for whatever comes out of your keyboard.

  • Posts: for longer written pieces you want to format and share with your team.
  • Snippets: for capturing blocks of raw text, code, log files and other preformatted text.

Both posts & snippets have all the features of other file types: comments, stars, public & private sharing, etc.

wherever you are

Slack has fully native apps for iOS and Android to give you the full functionality of Slack wherever you go.

You get access to everything from the palm of your hand: file search and filtering, starred items, the team directory and, of course, all your messages.

“I spend a lot of time on my phone using the mobile app because I’m moving around the office a lot – that was a big plus for us – the mobile app is best-in-class.”

Matthew McCroskey, Head of Mobile Development, Lonely Planet

Read-state synchronization

It may sound complex, but Slack’s read state synchronization is simple: when you read something on your phone, your laptop will know about it and automatically mark those messages as read.

Whatever you do on one device — catch up on direct messages, post a comment, upload a file — is reflected everywhere. Everything is in sync. We’ll keep your place so you can always pick up right where you left off.

Flexible Notifications

  • Slack will notify you of new activity on your mobile, desktop or via email
  • Choose the number of notifications you want: all the way from “everything” to “just when someone wants my attention”
  • Customize your own list of highlight words to trigger notifications.

“Slack is basically blowing us away with its awesomeness. We especially love the notifications.”

Anthony Showalter, Co-Founder, Pear Deck

Mobile Native

  • Unread activity is grouped at the top of the channel list for easy thumb access
  • Tap-hold to edit a typo in one of your messages
  • Upload images into a channel with just a few taps
  • Browse Slack files to preview images and read documents from anywhere

More than any one feature, we wanted Slack to “feel right” in your hand. Slack’s mobile apps are not an afterthought, but core to what it means to use Slack for your team’s communication.
