HISTORY- The Ancient World
|
|
|
This year your first grader will embark on a fascinating journey through time,
studying ancient civilizations. We have selected colorful and
intriguing "living" books
that illustrate the civilizations of times past, tell the
fascinating stories and myths connected with each ancient culture,
and introduce the famous and notable characters who shaped
human history.
Your student
will also enjoy filling in and personalizing the
Book Of the Centuries, a
Charlotte Mason concept, and will have fun learning
geography using our "natural" approach (found in teacher's
Corebook).

LITERATURE |
|
|
Nothing inspires a child like good literature.
Following is a list of some or our favorite classic read-aloud
books appropriate for first graders. We have attempted to provide a
range of literary genres, including poetry and different
types of fiction.
(If you would like to develop your
own list, look over our
CYOC literature page for helpful
guidelines.) |

SCIENCE & NATURE |
|
|
Charlotte Mason stressed the
importance of spending many hours out-of-doors playing and studying
nature. We
emphasize the outdoors and
an interactive approach to science during these
early years and offer several nature kits based on Anna Botsford Comstock's Handbook of Nature Study.
(See our CYOC science page) Below you will find
supplemental books covering concepts children should learn
in the first grade. |

Save your money for books!
For the most part, I've found that teaching children to read is not
very hard. (Many parents become frustrated simply because they try to
teach a child who is still too young*.) There is no need for
an expensive and fancy curriculum with all sorts of gadgets and papers.
Basically, a child needs to be able to recognize all of the letters in
the alphabet and know what their primary sounds are. It is a small
step from there to actual reading. (If your child has much of a
problem moving from letter/sound recognition to reading, he is probably
still too young!) Of course, phonetic study from
the beginning is essential, so that when the child encounters certain
letter combinations he will know how to decode them.
I have successfully used this program
with several children, most of whom could read easy books by the 3rd
lesson. All have moved very quickly to the fluent reader level,
all the while enjoying their new found skill.
Twenty-one short lessons focusing on
phonetics are included in this program, most of which can be done in
about ten minutes apiece.
................................................................................................
*Even if your child recognized letters and sounds at a
young age, he/she may not be ready to read. It is my suggestion
that you "give it a go" and if it becomes at all tedious or
frustrating, stop for about three months and then try it again.
Remember, in the same way that it doesn't matter how old you were
when you learned to walk, it doesn't make a difference to your child's
future whether he learns to read at 4, 5, or 6! Keep in mind that
he learns more from listening to you read books aloud anyway!
Find books for beginners in the "easy reader" section of your library's
children's department or check out our
C-Y-O-C Reading page.

MATHEMATICS |
|
|
Building
a thorough understanding of the mathematical concepts of numbers,
counting, and addition is vitally important before moving on to other
concepts. We start off with Tanglewood's Mouse Math which teaches basic
concepts using both a workbook and tactile approach.
When this short but foundational book is finished, your
first grader will move on to the MCP 1st grade math
workbook. (A teacher's edition is available, but we don't
suggest it for this early age.) *We don't carry the MCP
math products yet, but click below for info on how to
purchase them.

used to have this as a free file, but it got

ART & MUSIC |
|
|
We have selected fine art and music materials which can be easily
incorporated into your classical/Charlotte Mason homeschool. We
suggest that you pick one Art topic and one Music topic to start off
with. Then, come back for others when the need arises!

FOREIGN LANGUAGE |
|
|
The Tanglewood School Curriculum does not begin formal language
study until 2nd grade-Latin. However, if you want to
start this year, check out our
Latin page to see what might work for you.
There are also several
modern language programs available for young children and you
may want to shop around and find one that you think would
be beneficial to your child's education. (Let us know what
does and doesn't work for you!) |

THEOLOGY
Don't forget the most important subject your homeschooled
children will study. Knowledge without wisdom is
worth little. Visit our "Where's the Queen?" page
for ideas and resources that can be included in your
studies.
