  • 1. How do I activate my digital subscription?

If you already purchased a digital subscription via iTunes, you can activate your digital subscription by creating an NYTimes.com account or logging in to an existing account. To activate your digital subscription, you must log in or create your account on the iPhone or iPad that you used to purchase your subscription.

Within the NYTimes app, go to the app settings (on the Top News title bar in the iPhone app; on the bottom toolbar in the iPad app) and tap Activate NYTimes.com. The Activate NYTimes.com option will only be available on the device you used to purchase your subscription via iTunes.

If you’re still having issues, please contact Customer Care.

  • 2. Why do I need to activate my subscription?

We allow users to purchase an NYTimes.com subscription via iTunes. However, when you purchase a subscription through iTunes your subscription information is tied to your Apple ID. In order to take advantage of additional features associated with your subscription (like unlimited access on the Web and the ability to save articles) you need to associate your subscription with an NYTimes.com account.

Until you activate your subscription, your iTunes subscription information is only stored on your device; you need to activate your subscription on the same device that you used to purchase your subscription.

  • 3. I purchased a digital subscription through iTunes — why can’t I log in with my Apple ID?

Logging in to NYTimes apps and the NYTimes Web site requires an NYTimes.com account. If you purchased a subscription via iTunes, you need to activate that subscription by creating or signing in to your NYTimes.com account on the device that you used to purchase your subscription.

  • 4. I already have an NYTimes.com account – do I need to create a new account to activate my subscription?

No. If you already have an NYTimes.com account you can use it to activate your subscription. On the device you used to purchase your subscription, activate your account using the instruction in How do I activate my digital subscription?

  • 5. Is there a difference between a subscription purchased via iTunes and a subscription purchased on NYTimes.com?

If you purchased your subscription via iTunes, you will have to activate it to receive all of the benefits associated with a digital subscription. An activated subscription purchased via iTunes and a subscription purchased on NYTimes.com are the same. You can find more information on NYTimes digital subscriptions in our Digital Subscriptions and Premium Products FAQ.

  • 6. How do I recover my user name or password?

You can find information on recovering your NYTimes.com account credentials in our Registration FAQ.
