Malawian Airlines Receives Another Aircraft

Lilongwe, 15 February: Malawian Airlines Limited will, on Sunday, February 16, receive its second and biggest aircraft from Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737-800.

According to the Malawian Airlines public relations officer, Maganizo Mazeze, the Ethiopian Airlines, with 49 per cent stakes in the local airline company while Malawi Government has a 51 per cent share, will deliver the plane at a function to be held at the Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe.

"The delivery of the plane, a new generation Boeing 737-800, with two configurations, has a 154 seat capacity. It will launch its first commercial flight to Johannesburg on Monday, 17 February, 2014.

"The airline's flagship daily service of Johannesburg will originate from Lilongwe with a stop-over in Blantyre. This is the first time that Lilongwe and Blantyre will have daily flights into Johannesburg, one of Africa's busiest connecting hubs to the rest of the world," Mazeze said in a statement made available to Malawi News Agency (Mana).

The delivery of the Boeing 737-800 completes the initial fleet of two aircraft for Malawian Airlines, the other being the Bombardier Q400. The 67-seater Q400, started operations on 31 January, 2014 with daily services between Lilongwe and Blantyre and three times a week to Harare.
