It's a scene that Tom Hardy fans the world over could only dream of.

But the 36-year-old actor will undoubtedly have made female hearts flutter after starring in a sexy new Stand Up To Cancer campaign on behalf of Cancer Research UK.

Displaying his toned torso and rather extensive tattoo collection, the Inception star went shirtless as he grimaced while running through a dramatic cloud of smoke towards the camera.

Taking a moment to relax in between scenes, Tom covered up in a cobalt blue baseball cap as he tapped away on his mobile phone.

It's been a busy few months for the talented thespian, who has several big movies on the horizon, including Mad Max: Fury Road, and Rocketman, in which he will play music legend Sir Elton John.

Meanwhile, it was announced earlier this month that he will make a triumphant return to the world of television later this year after joining the cast of period drama Peaky Blinders.

The British movie star will appear in the second series of the hit BBC Two gangster drama, joining his The Dark Knight Rises co-star Cillian Murphy.

The official Twitter account for Peaky Blinders announced the exciting news, writing: 'FAN EXCLUSIVE: TOM HARDY WILL JOIN THE CAST OF #PEAKYBLINDERS! As a thanks for your support, YOU are the 1st to know (sic).'

Peaky Blinders follows the Shelby crime family - led by the cunning and masterful Tommy (Cillian) - and is set in Birmingham just after World War I.

The drama also stars top acting talent, such as Helen McCrory and Sam Neill as Chief Inspector Chester Campbell, a detective who arrives in Birmingham from Belfast to rid the city of corruption and gangs.

The first series of Peaky Blinders - which has been compared to hit US drama Boardwalk Empire - was a huge hit for BBC Two last year, averaging two million viewers.

Series Two of Peaky Blinders starts shooting later this month and will air on BBC Two in autumn 2014. It will see the Shelby family expand their empire as the 1920s begin to roar.

The move will also see Tom reunite with director Steven Knight, who previously worked with the actor on Locke.

Film star Tom is best known for playing Bane in Batman flick The Dark Knight Rises, and has had major film roles in roles in Inception and Lawless after cutting his teeth on the small screen, winning praise for his moving role as emotionally disturbed Stuart Shorter in TV film Stuart: A Life Backwards.
