Why I decided to store tissue from my daughter's umbilical cord, by Rebecca Judd

WAG Rebecca Judd is banking on the future, taking the unusual step of preserving her new daughter Billie Kate's stem cell rich umbilical cord.

The 31-year-old mother-of-two stored blood and tissue after her newborn's February birth as a precautionary measure to protect her family in the event stem cell treatment were ever needed.

'Of course, you obviously hope to never be in a position to have to use it. But ensuring we stored this important cord tissue and cord blood — when you have only one opportunity at birth — made sense,' she told Sydney's Daily Telegraph.

'It made a lot of sense to store both the cord tissue and blood with our new daughter,' she continued, after she and her Carlton Football captain husband Chris Judd, stored umbilical cord blood after the birth of their first child Oscar.

Considered the building blocks of life, the undifferentiated cells have the potential to develop into a variety of cell types including blood, muscle and bone.

Those preserved at birth can be used in the treatment of conditions such as leukemia and lymphoma and as research advances, they are expected to aid in the treatment of cerebral palsy, type one diabetes and heart disease.

Former Australian Olympic swimmer Michael Klim and his wife Lindy took a similar step in 2011, banking their newborn daughter Frankie's cord blood.

The Channel Nine weather presenter debuted her taut post baby body in a form-fitting white dress at the Myer Winter Fashion Launch on Thursday, less than three weeks after giving birth.

She later credited pelvic floor exercises just one day after birth, compression shapewear and pilates for her impressive transformation.

I heard about this recently. Is it something everyone gets offered to do when they give birth?

Very wise decision! A relative is to undergo a bone marrow transplant at GOSH next week...if the cells from birth were harvested..it would have solved huge tissue and cell matters.. I urge every new born baby's parent to do it.. You are saving for the future.. In fact it should be standard procedure!
