The Cranes - The Cranes (Dadaphonic)

The Cranes The Cranes are back with their first studio album in four years, and on first listen, nothing much has changed. They're still the hypnotic, dreamy experimenters that they always were, and sounding as futuristic as ever.

Allison Shaw's child-like vocals remain ever enchanting, and the abundance of synths and guitars make this sound like something taken straight out of the twenty-second century. If Muse's apocalyptic rock isn't your bag, then the Cranes are definitely a band you should check out. This self-titled album is quite the opposite of apocalyptic – it's almost utopian.

But be warned: this album is not mainstream. It's not going to get you singing and dancing. This is thought-provoking music, designed to be listened to actively. If you're a student and you want an album to take you through the night whilst doing that last-minute essay, then buy this. Equally, if you want an album just to relax to, again this is a good choice.

Through the course of the 11 tracks, the Cranes have made a great comeback album, showing how they've grown as a unit and how their experimentation still remains. Stand-out tracks include 'Wires', a beautiful piano ballad, 'Wonderful Things', a mesmerising guitar track, and 'Sleepwalking', an instrumental that would make the great movie soundtrack composers proud.

'The Cranes' is truly an intelligent, and - if your cup of tea - an essential album to own. Britain's answer to Sigur Ros, expect a grand euphoric return from the Portsmouth quintet.

The Cranes - The Cranes (Dadaphonic)
After all this talk of the credit crunch, the world needs an album to both stimulate and relax. This Portsmouth act might just provide the solution.
