Artists' Laboratory 02: Stephen Farthing RA
The Back Story
10 November—19 December 2010
In the Weston Rooms
This exhibition, the second in the Artists’ Laboratory series, features recent work by the painter Stephen Farthing RA.
Stephen Farthing RA, 'Boucher: The Back Story', 2010. Oil on canvas, 207 x 173 cm. Courtesy of the Artist. Through five separate sections, each comprising a large work and supporting material, the exhibition examines the artist’s preoccupation with looking beyond the surface of the visual image by exploring the story behind the work, its position within the classification of art, or the highlighting of calligraphy and patterns.
Each section of the exhibition addresses the coming together of image and text. It considers art historical connections, acknowledges the contribution of a ‘back story’ in the execution of a work of art and explores the journey of the artist between London and New York.
Artists’ Laboratory will return again in autumn 2011, where the Royal Academy will continue to explore the more experimental and less familiar work and practices of the Royal Academicians.
