After returning to the top last week, Pharrell Williams’ Happy maintains its lead this week and notches a seventh week at No.1. It is now one week away from matching the eight weeks he spent at the top as a collaborator on Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines (No.1 May ’13). Williams will be in the country next month touring nationally as a headlining act for the Future Music Festival. After making their top 50 debut last week, UK quartet Clean Bandit score their first ever top three hit with Rather Be, jumping twelve spots to No.3.. US singer Sara Bareilles, makes her second top ten appearance as her new single Brave, moves up nine spots to No.8. Bareilles’ first top ten appearance came six years ago with Love Song (No.4 June ’08). INXS continues their infiltration of the ARIA Singles chart with a total of nine singles in the top 100 this week. The highest, Never Tear Us Apart originally peaked at No.14 in September 1988 following its initial release. This week, almost twenty-six years later it achieves a new peak at No.11, on the back of the INXS mini-series it lends its name to.
No.15 AIR BALLOON – Lily Allen. Air Balloon is the second single to be released from Lily Allen’s forthcoming third studio album Sheezus, due for release later this year. It follows on from the first single, Hard Out Here (No.14 Dec. ’13) and becomes Allen’s sixth top 20 single. Allen scored her highest charting single in 2009 with The Fear (No.3 Mar. ’09) and equaled it that same year with Not Fair (No.3 June ’09).
No.22 CATCH – Will Sparks. Melbourne DJ Will Sparks, makes his second appearance on the ARIA charts with his new single, Catch. It follows on from Bring It Back (No.33 Oct. ’13) and becomes his highest charting single to date. Sparks is currently touring Australia in support of the single.
No.40 HIGH – Peking Duk. Australian house music duo Peking Duk, make their first top 40 appearance with their new single High. Made up of DJs Adam Hyde and Reuben Styles, the duo made their ARIA Singles chart debut last year with Feels Like (No.81 Sep. ’13). High debuts at No.10 on the ARIA Dance Singles chart and No.12 on the ARIA Club Chart this week.
No.66 REPLAY – Zendaya. Seventeen year-old American singer/actress/dancer Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman, known simply as Zendaya, makes her first appearance on the ARIA charts this week with her debut single, Replay. It is the lead single from her debut self-titled album, which peaked at No.51 on the US Billboard 200 Albums chart last year. The single reached No.40 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
No.70 SHE ONLY LOVES ME WHEN I’M THERE – Ball Park Music. Whilst Brisbane indie rock band Ball Park Music have appeared on the ARIA Albums chart twice with Happiness And Surrounding Suburbs (No.36 Sep. ’11) and their top ten follow-up Museum (No.9 Oct. ’12), this week they score their first ever top 100 ARIA single with, She Only Loves Me When I’m There. It is the lead single from their third studio album, Puddinghead, due for release in April.
No.79 AEROSOL CAN – Major Lazer Feat. Pharrell Williams. American producer Diplo, makes his fourth appearance on the ARIA Singles chart under the guise of his electronic dancehall project, Major Lazer. Aerosol Can is the new and it follows on from Watch Out For This (Bumaye) (No.87 Apr. ’13) and the two top 40 singles, Bubble Butt (No.39 July ’13) and Get Free (No.39 Feb. ’13). It is the lead single from the upcoming EP, Apocalypse Soon due for release this week.
No.81 MYSTIFY – INXS. INXS score their first top 100 debut on the ARIA Singles chart in almost eight years with, Mystify. The track was the fifth and final single from their 1987 album Kick, which sits at No.2 on the ARIA Albums chart this week. INXS’ last single to debut was Afterglow (No.24 May. ’06), which featured new front man JD Fortune. Mystify is one of nine INXS singles in the chart this week.
No.97 MIDNIGHT MEMORIES – One Direction. Midnight Memories is the third single and title track taken from UK boy band One Direction’s third studio album, Midnight Memories (No.1 Dec. ’13). It follows on from Story Of My Life (No.3 Nov. ’13) and Best Song Ever (No.4 July ’13) and becomes their fifteenth top 100 ARIA single. The boys also picked up two awards at the 2014 Brit Awards last week for Best Video and Global Success.
Following on from the airing of the second and final part of the Channel 7 mini-series Never Tear Us Apart last Sunday night, INXS remain at the top of the ARIA Albums chart with, The Very Best. The group’s 1987 album Kick, moves five spots to match its previous peak of No.2, spending its twelfth week in that position. This is the first time in ARIA charts history that an Australian artist has occupied the No.1 and No.2 positions on the Albums chart simultaneously. Overall, it is the first time any artist has achieved the feat since Michael Jackson dominated the chart following his death in 2009. INXS have a further five albums in the top 100 - Live At Wembley Stadium 1991 at No.17, The Swing at No.25, Shabooh Shoobah at No.33, Listen Like Thieves at No.36 and X re-entering at No.98. With a national tour currently underway, US rapper Eminem returns to the top ten with The Marshall Mathers LP 2 (No.1 Nov. ’13) jumping four spots to No.9. Also on tour at the moment is country music veteran Dolly Parton, whose new album Blue Smoke moves one position to No.7, giving Parton her all time highest peak. Parton’s career-spanning retrospective The Very Best of Dolly Parton, also reaches a new peak at No.21, after previously peaking at No.38 in May 2007.
No.6 BELOVED – I Killed The Prom Queen. Adelaide metalcore band I Killed The Prom Queen, score the highest debut this week with their third studio album, Beloved. It is their first album to be released since their reformation in 2011 and also marks their first ever appearance in the ARIA top ten. Their previous chart best was with Music For The Recently Deceased (No.27 Aug. ’06). They were last in the charts with their live album Sleepless Nights & City Lights (No.48 Dec. ’08). The band is currently touring nationally as part of the Soundwave Festival.
No.23 THE OUTSIDERS – Eric Church. American country rock singer/songwriter Eric Church, makes his first appearance on the ARIA Albums chart this week with his fourth studio album, The Outsiders. It becomes his second album to top the US Billboard 200 albums chart following 2011’s, Chief.
No.43 [CROSSES] – [Crosses]. American electronic rock band Crosses, make their first appearance on the ARIA charts this week with their debut self-titled album. The band is made up of Deftones singer Chino Moreno, Far guitarist Shaun Lopez and Chuck Doom and formed in 2011. The trio is touring nationally as part of the Soundwave Festival. Moreno was last in the charts with the Deftones’ seventh studio album Koi No Yokan (No.16 Nov. ’12).
No.50 ISSUES – Issues. Issues are an American metalcore band, making their first appearance on the ARIA charts this week with their debut self-titled album. It follows on from the 2013 EP Black Diamonds, which reached No.96 on the US Billboard 200 Albums chart. The group is known for mixing metal with Top 40 pop music, including a cover of Justin Bieber’s Boyfriend (No.5 Apr. ’12) on the compilation series Punk Goes Pop 5, which reached No.10 on the ARIA Compilation Albums chart in 2012.
No.92 THE ROYAL SESSIONS – Paul Rodgers. Rock singer Paul Rodgers, of Free and Bad Company fame, makes his solo ARIA chart debut this week with his twelfth solo album, The Royal Sessions. The album consists of ten covers of blues and soul songs that inspired Rodgers in his youth including Albert King’s Born Under A Bad Sign and Dionne Warwick’s Walk On By. As a member of Bad Company, he scored his highest charting album with their self-titled debut, which reached No.6 in 1974.
No.97 THE LION KING – Original Broadway Cast. Disney’s classic 1994 animated film The Lion King, was adapted as a Broadway musical in 1997 and productions continue to show around the world today. The Lion King is the soundtrack performed by the original Broadway cast and its debut on the charts this week coincides with the Australian production doing a number of shows in Sydney over the coming weeks. The original film soundtrack reached No.3 in October 1994.
No.100 LITTLE RED – Katy B. British singer/songwriter Kathleen Anne Brien, better known by her stage name Katy B, makes her ARIA chart debut this week with her second album, Little Red. It is the follow-up to 2011’s On A Mission and debuted at No.1 on the UK Albums chart last week.
