The pig did it!

The mystery of how Joan Rivers ended up covered in pie has been solved - Miss Piggy was behind the creamy attack on Friday night.

Onlookers were shocked as the comedienne and Fashion Police host fled the QVC Red Carpet Style event shortly after making a glamorous arrival with white icing smeared all over her face, in her hair and down the front of her outfit.

Joan and the famous hog got into a beef while discussing their jewellery line on the home shopping network.

The pair of leading ladies have worked together in the past in film Muppet's Take Manhattan but their relationship has clearly soured.

In a video of the fight, Joan sparked a heated debate between the pair after calling Missy Piggy and old ham.

Miss Piggy retorted: 'Oh, a pork joke. How original Joan. Here let me try - plastic surgery, plastic surgery.'

When the pig went to leave, the comedienne tried to stop her and Miss Piggy accuses her of touching her breast.

As things got physical, Miss Piggy pushed Joan into a giant three tiered cake covering her in icing, prompting the 80-year-old to flee the hotel.

A well-placed source tells the MailOnline that the comic left the event in a hurry, 'Screaming to security, "Get me to my car!"' as security cleared a path for her.

She leapt into her vehicle followed soon after by a concerned unidentified woman dressed in a red dress, who hopped in with her before zooming off.

Plenty of fellow guests at the event took to Twitter to write of their shock at the sight of the 80-year-old bolting from the party following the incident.

However, Joan managed to clean herself up and return to the event in time to take the QVC stage and show home viewers some of her products for the shopping network.

Just hours earlier, Joan was in great spirits as she walked the red carpet.

The star looked stunning in loose-fitting black dress pants, a matching singlet and cropped black lace top with billowing floor-length train.

She completed her outfit with black pointy heels and a stunning pale gold necklace with onyx stone detail.

Her short blonde locks were styled in a voluminous, sleek 'do and her make-up was prefectly applied, featuring smoky bronze eyeshadow and glossy rose lips.

Of course, this isn't the first cake Joan has received to her moneymaker.

Last June, singer Fergie surprised the birthday girl with a sweet treat on the set of Fashion Police, which she then proceeded to smoosh in her face.

The comedienne was able to see the funny side back then, laughing her head off before posing for photos with her pal with the remnants still covering her dial.

She's been known for making some of the most scathing critiques of stars' outfits on the red carpet, with her barbed insults becoming as typical a feature of major award shows as the gold statues themselves.

What a good sport: Joan rolled with the punches, enjoying a laugh and posing for a photo with her assailant following the smooshing that took place on the set of E!'s Fashion Police

I hope it wasn't staged. But wouldn't the cake slide down her plastic face. Maybe it stuck to the make up???

I'm sure it was staged. If it were real, I can't see her leaving. She'd stay and fight and never shut-up, lol.

I find it ironic that with all the modern focus on anti-bullying we still have people who enjoy Joan Rivers, a woman who made a career of being obnoxious, cruel and insulting.

If it was staged, that's her business, if not, it's assault and the person responsible should be held responsible.

I hope it's real, though I think it's not, since none of the cake messed up her eye makeup.

Joan is a vulgar, vile woman. Nothing funny about her.

She still looks amazing, even with cake all over her. How does she do that?
