Dapper! Daniel Day-Lewis looks smart in short hair and long coat as he touches down solo in New York

He's not exactly known for his style, but when Daniel Day-Lewis wants to look put together, he does it right.

The Oscar winner was seen in casual chic as he touched down solo at New York's JFK airport on Friday.

The 56-year-old wore not only groomed salt-and-pepper hair, but he smartly paired a green ascot with a beige trench coat, blue jeans and a light blue button-down shirt.

His mood was also something to note.

Daniel, who used to be very broody in his 20s, smiled to onlookers as he breezed out of his terminal.

It was also nice to see that he had no handlers with him, not even one security guard.

Day-Lewis was smiling as he spoke with a man just in front of an awaiting car.

Aside from his lauded acting abilities, the Crucible actor is also known as being an intense recluse, rarely granting interviews to the media.

His Gangs Of New York co-star Leonardo DiCaprio, 39, recently opened up about his unusual introduction to the method actor while at a Screen Actors Guild event, Irish Central reported.

In an effort to persuade Day-Lewis to star in the then upcoming Martin Scorsese film Gangs Of New York, DiCaprio took a stroll with the Greenwich native in Central Park.

'We sat down and we started talking about acting. I immediately asked him, I said, "Look, there’s a role of a gangster in turn-of-the-century New York, who’s a butcher, who carries butcher knives with a top hat and a moustache in a Martin Scorsese movie. Who in their right mind wouldn’t do this?"' he said.

Day-Lewis remained unconvinced, prompting DiCaprio to employ the help of co-star Tobey Maguire to sway the actor's mind.

'It was actually Tobey who said to him, "Y’know, when somebody has a talent like yours, it’s almost their responsibility to do it, to get back in the saddle." I think he slightly disagreed with him at first, but eventually, thank God, he said yes,' he said.

The actor will be granting another rare public appearance at the Oscars on Sunday.

Daniel will be presenting the Best Actor, an honour he was presented with last year for his performance as the beloved American president in Lincoln.

Just watched Lincoln and it was like actually watching what I would imagine Abraham Lincoln to have looked and sounded and acted, it was quite bizarre how convincing he was. Well deserved his Oscar.
