It is the embarrassing flub that has seen him become a nationwide figure of fun.

And now John Travolta has publicly apologised for mangling Idina Menzel's name when he introduced her at the Oscars.

The Look Who's Talking star admitted he was putting himself through the wringer after accidentally calling her 'Adele Dazeem,' before ultimately deciding to clear his conscience.

Twitter was abuzz after he made the embarrassing gaffe before her performance of Frozen's Let It Go, which won the Academy Award for best original song.

In a statement the 60-year-old said: 'I've been beating myself up all day.

'Then I thought, what would Idina Menzel say? She'd say, let it go, let it go!'

'Idina is incredibly talented and I am so happy Frozen took home two Oscars Sunday night!'

And it seems that despite his embarrassing mistake in front of 43 million people, there are no hard feelings.

A source told People that far from being annoyed by the error, the 42-year-old Broadway star 'thought it was funny.'

Another star who thought it was amusing is David Letterman, who read out a top ten list of ways to mispronounce Idina‘s name during a segment on CBS's The Late Show, which included offerings such as Idrizzle Menzezzle and Liza Menzelli.

Award-winning: The singer took home the Best Original Song prize for the hit tune, while Frozen won the Best Animated Feature gong

Classy broad: The musical star is said to have found the Saturday Night Fever star's error hilarious

Social media went into overdrive on Sunday after John said: 'The Oscar-nominated gorgeously empowering song Let It Go from the Oscar-winning animated movie Frozen, please welcome the wickedly talented one and only Adele Dazeem.'

One Twitter user joked: 'I wanna put my name through the John Travolta name generator.(sic)'

And TV journalist Elizabeth Vargas tweeted: 'Oh no - John travolta just mangled Idina Menzels name! (sic)'

Despite the mispronunciation, it didn't seem to affect the 42-year-old star, who put in a scintillating performance of the song, the anthem of her character Queen Elsa in the movie Frozen.

What I don't understand is how he messed this up...this is one of the most rehearsed shows on Earth, how is it possible he messed it up when he must have rehearsed it...

Fairly obvious Travolta sent his wax effigy and stayed at home. Why don't you people pick up on these things?
