They've pushed their bodies to the limit in a series of punishing fitness challenges in the fight to be crowned Australia's Biggest Loser.

But Thursday's episode of the hit reality TV show saw them face their toughest challenge to date, a test that drew on their mental strength, courage and focus.

As burning flames licked at the corners of a set of red hot coals the contestants heard that they would have to use their mental ability to cross the scorching rocks that could reach temperatures of up to 500 degrees Celsius.

Commando boomed: 'Contestants tonight you're going to walk on fire.'

While Shannan said: 'Think of this as a right of passage to let go of your past.'

With their faces lit up by the flickering flames, the contestants looked suitably apprehensive, as Commando said: 'So who's fearful?'

It was Toni who showed her vulnerable side, saying: 'The heat of it scares me. Fire has such a negative connotation for me.'

The arts teacher and her husband escape a horrific fire at their hotel, loosing everything of value, but it didn't stop her from bravely squaring up to cross the coals first.

With her head held high the 48-year-old marched firmly across, breaking into a beaming grin as she exclaimed: 'That's a fantastic feeling. Wow! I can do anything now. That was phenomenal.'

And one by one the contestants completed the challenge until it was Cal's turn to go.

A physical powerhouse in the pyramid challenge earlier in the week, the dad has previously struggled to overcome mental tests and stood teetering on the edge, reduced to a quivering wreck: 'You could just feel the immense heat coming off the coals. Unless you got over that mental barrier you were going to do yourself some damage.'

But finally breaking through the noise in his head he does it.

It was a day of tough tests as earlier the body-weary contenders heard from Hayley that they had to complete a triathlon for an extremely sought-after prize, a golden immunity bracelet that the winner could use to save themselves at any point until the end of the game.

'The minute Hayley said golden bracelet I thought of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory and the golden ticket,' said Katrina. 'I really want that.'

The Biggest Loser triathlon was split into three segments: a 1.5km spring, a 1km water track race, where the last two contestants would be knocked out, and finally, the remaining players would have to stand on a floating beam for as long as possible until the last one standing won.

As the whistle blew Cal hit the track running, cockily saying: 'I took off on the running leg and didn't even bother to look behind me because I knew they wouldn't be able to keep up with me.'

The girls started walking with Sharon ramping up to a short sprint as the water's edge came into sight.

Their bodies ruined from the pyramid of fitness challenge Big Kev and Craig were struggling to keep up the pace.

Cal and Kerry took the lead hitting the water cycles first, as the girls came up next, but Sharon got stuck bobbing around in the middle of the lake while stragglers Big Kev and Craig started to make up the ground.

'My legs were just so sore that I couldn't physically lift my body weight out of the water,' said the brave-hearted Big Kev.

With Craig putting his old BMX legs to work he eventually over took Sharon to steal a place at the pontoons, knocking Big Kev out of the running as well.

The final six mounted the floating pontoons trying to balance on water, as Cal tried to trash talk them into falling off the small balancing block.

'I knew he had a short attention span, so it didn't bother me,' said Craig as Cal tried to get him to demonstrate how to throw a fishing line out.

As Jane took the first tumble into the freezing cold lake, she was swiftly followed by Toni and Craig, leaving Cal, Katrina and Kerry.

Sandwiched in the middle of the blokes, Katrina said of Cal: 'I was thinking bad things about him, mentally pushing him off.'

While the arrogant dad said: 'I'm bored s**tless.'

Kerry encouraged him to: 'Jump in you idiot, have a little swim.'

But as they gradually moved down to smaller block after smaller block, Kerry slipped off and then Cal started wobbling uncontrollable plunging head first into the water, and Katrina was crowned champ.

The official Biggest Loser triathlete and winner of golden bracelet, said: 'Positive thinking is a mighty powerful thing it certainly beats all those negative thoughts.'

the time your foot touches the embers ground is nowhere near enough to burn your skin, or even cause a heat rash, add that to the fact that the embers themselves conduct very little heat make for a very comfortable stroll. An advert for a show here, nothing more.

Maybe they can accelerate their weight loss by laying on the hot coals. Can't be too much fat on the bottoms of their feet. ;)

I thought that one of the contestants going across the coals had pretty good looking thighs, and then I realized it was her calves/ankles. Oops!
