John Mayer 'hooked up with SoulCycle instructor he met at a bar which may have caused Katy Perry split'

John Mayer had a brief fling with a SoulCycle instructor last year, which may have contributed to his February split from Katy Perry.

The 36-year-old Continuum singer met redhead Lauren McHale, 24, at a bar in LA in May, according to the new issue of Star magazine. They allegedly hit it off and he went home with her to party some more. 'They kissed,' a source is quoted as telling the weekly.

The same day the story came out, Katy was seen covering her face as she touched down in LA after a trip to Australia.

'It was very innocent. They didn't sleep together,' added the insider about Mayer's hook-up.

The two 'exchanged numbers' and kept in touch. 'They texted for a few weeks,' said the source.

It didn't last long, however: 'Nothing came of it and they haven't seen each other since.'

Though Mayer apparently met the fitness instructor when he and Katy were said to be on a break, the dalliance could 'possibly' have contributed to John and Katy's split, according to the report.

After all, PageSix claimed just days after the breakup that Perry flew into a rage when she found 'text messages on John's phone from some random girl' and shortly after broke up with him.

That 'random girl' could have been McHale.

But the Your Body Is A Wonderland singer - who was spotted at the Sunset Tower in LA over the weekend chatting with Anna Faris - is not worrying about it. He's reportedly relieved to be single again.

'He hated how much Katy parties,' a source claimed. 'He thinks she acts like a silly teenager when she's drunk.'

Another problem he had with the Prism singer was her penchant for flashing what appeared to be engagement rings.

While in London at the Elle Awards she showed off an Art Deco style diamond sprakler.

'The drove him away,' a source told the weekly. 'He wasn't ready.'

As far as a reconciliation, Star's source insisted, 'They've had rough patches, but this may be for good.'

The insider added: 'They have completely broken up, and he's moved out.' As far as Perry's mental state, it was claimed she is a 'wreck' though she looked happy while making appearances Down Under on Monday and Tuesday.

Also on Wednesday People mentioned the duo had age gap problems. Mayer is seven years older than the Santa Barbara native.

'At times they seemed really happy together and in love, and other times he seemed like he just wanted to get away from all the parties and go home,' a source claimed. 'I can't say I always blamed him.'

And at the end of the day, they didn't have enough in common. 'Despite caring about each other very much and wanting to make it work, they are, at their core, quite different,' added the Mayer friend.

She was also away a lot. 'She's a smart girl. She knows no relationship can survive that kind of distance and strain, and she's not going to slow down now when she's at the top of her game,' added the insider.
