So what DOES happen to Don Draper? Cryptic new Mad Men trailer shows Jon Hamm's troubled executive leaving a plane in the sunshine

Last season's dramatic finale saw him wreck his marriage to stunning actress wife Megan and jeopardise his career at Sterling-Cooper & Partners with a passionately ill-advised speech to Hershey executives.

And now a small hint about Don Draper's fate has been revealed in a new Mad Men teaser trailer released on Thursday.

To the tune of Wax Tailor’s Que Sera, Jon Hamm's suited advertising executive disembarks from a plane in the bright sunshine.

While it is unclear where Don has ended up, there is a city skyline in the distance, hinting he could have jetted off to Los Angeles or even be back in Manhattan after being asked to take an emergency leave of absence from his job.

Like Breaking Bad, which also split its final series on AMC into two parts, Mad Men will air its first seven episodes, entitled The Beginning on April 13, while the last seven shows - The End Of An Era - will be saved for next year.

Although the sixth season of Mad Men took place between December 1967 and November 1968, it is not yet known if the new series will begin immediately after.

'Every season is a new story, and I don't want to get bored but I also don't want to let the audience down,' the show's creator Matthew Weiner told The Hollywood Reporter when asked about writing a new season.

'For me, I start over,' he added. 'And there's this kind of thing that happens with the audience every year where it's like they're very happy to see us back in the première, and when the new story starts around episode two they start getting antsy and then they get with it by episode three when they see it's a new story.'

However, Weiner says Mad Men will not follow in the footsteps of other AMC shows like Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead and get a spin off.

'There's no chance,' he added. 'No judgement against anybody else - but this is it. This is the story. When it's done, it's done.'

For Hamm, the end of the show is bound to be an emotional experience.

'Will it be sad?' he told The Guardian last year. 'Absolutely. I have made a lot of very close friends on the show. You know, I am feeling pretty zen about it just now, but probably next year I will be crying my eyes out.'

However, the star is already looking ahead to what life holds for him beyond Mad Men which began back in 2007.

'It has been a long stretch,' he said. 'If you look back at Don and Betty in series one, and how young the kids were, and how much more hair I had, you get a real sense of life passing; it's a bit like one of those Russian novels in that way.

'It has been a solid 25 per cent of my existence on the planet. But that's enough, I think.'

The final countdown: Fans will have to wait until next year to find out the fates of Bert Cooper (Robert Morse), Pete Campbell (Vincent Kartheiser) Joan Harris (Christina Hendricks), Don Draper (Hamm) and Roger Sterling (John Slattery)

I'm not sure why, but I love Mad Men. I think it's because you just never know what to expect. You want the best, but you just know that the main characters have deep flaws. Just like us.

I think Don is Oedipus. Most of his women, except wives, have been petite brunettes like his mum. He will go into exile and Bob Benson will take his place?
