A Natty Boh and a Shot of Pikesville Rye at the Mount Royal Tavern

Sam Holden

Three dollars and seventy-five cents for a buzz dripping with sad Mobtown nostalgia, man, at a bar that makes you feel like you're an extra in Barfly. National Bohemian has been brewed out of state for years now, but we still pretend it's "From the Land of Pleasant Living." Pikesville is distilled in Kentucky using a Maryland recipe, but at least we get credit for inventing the shit, even if it left town before the Colts did. Makes us want to cry in our shot and our beer. At least the Tavern's still where it's supposed to be. And where else are you gonna get a shot and beer, any kind of shot and any kind of beer, for the measly sum of $3.75? The Boh is cold in the can, just as we like it. And the shot of Pikesville is intimidatingly huge, served in a rocks glass. It's the equivalent of two shots anywhere else. We may have to pretend our favorite beverages are still local, but we don't have to pretend they're cheap, which is nice.
