For the past eight years she's played the role of Lily Aldrin on the comedy How I Met Your Mother.

And Alyson Hannigan knew just how to celebrate as the show wrapped it's last ever episode - by chopping off her character's trademark long hair.

Having worn her hair in the same tousled style for years, Alyson debuted a short new look on Thursday.

Spotted nipped across a Los Angeles street after a shopping spree with her friend, the shoulder length style looked chic and manageable.

The new style is a bold departure from the mother of two, and a simple way to mark a new stage in Alyson's life.

The 39-year-old tweeted last week: 'I am officially wrapped from How I Met Your Mother!!! It has been a true pleasure to be a part of this family. Thankyouthankyouthankyou!!!'

Moving on: Alyson was pictured dashing across the road with a friend after a shopping trip

Alyson has made no secret of the fact she will miss working on her hit CBS show, which has been a huge part of her life.

She became tearful when discussing the change ahead of time on The Talk, admitting that she loved playing the onscreen wife of Jason Segel.

'He's just such a wonderful guy . . . I'm getting all . . .' Alyson said as she broke down.

But the one-time Buffy The Vampire Slayer star is now looking to the future.

She filmed the CBS pilot More Time With Family back in October, and is sure to be hoping the series gets commissioned.

As a 'put pilot' the network would be penalised if the episode doesn't air, increasing the likelihood that the show will receive a series order.

The show also stars Tom Papa, who plays a man undergoing a career change to be at home with his family.

And once again Alyson will be seen in the role of the lead character's wife.

She's with Tom Lenk, who any Buffy fan would recognize as the wonderful and hilarious former member of The Trio, Andrew Wells! Also, her hair looks adorable, and I still want to be her best friend.

" by chopping off her character's trademark long hair."______Has the author ever watched the show? Lily has had a wide variety of hair styles, lengths and colours, including ones that look exactly like the first photo and ones that were shorter.
